When I checked my calendar program and discovered that the last traveling I had done was in early 2005, I was surprised. Now I’m not. Getting ready is time-consuming and exhausting.

I had seven errands on my list of things to do this morning, and I managed to accomplish five of them. Still to do: go to Wally World and pick up a second small suitcase for the trip (rather than carrying one large one) and to AAA to get maps, since I’m planning to go to parts of California I’ve never seen before. And I have to stop by the jeweler again because the new yellow pearl is ready and assembled, i.e., the bail has been added. And I promise: no more pearls for a while.

Digression: I never owned Deerhounds because of their original function and purpose. Hunting antlered game is illegal in most states, and doesn’t appeal to me in any case. They have been, for 30 years, my companions, members of my family. I am as protective of animals as anyone you’ve ever met, but I truly resent being told by PETA that I HAVE to call them “companion animals,” not “pets.” The Humane Society of the United States is virtually “in bed” with PETA, and the Bank of America is quite vocal in its support of HSUS. Advertising in bank lobbies, and providing considerable financial support. It was with great pleasure that, today, I closed out six accounts at Bank of America: two checking accounts, two savings accounts and two credit cards. And the little girl kept asking me, “Why do you want to do this?” “Because I don’t like the way you do business.” I felt almost Viggo-esque, standing up for my principles. And it felt VERY good.
