I've been waiting curiously for this for a while...
Anywhere I Lay My Head Normally this sort of celebrity undertaking makes me want to either A) vomit, or B) ignore it until it ceases to exist. However, there are two factors at play here. One is the fact that I love Tom Waits. I love him. Love him. And most anything that has to do with him. The teenage me clung to Dylan like a drowning man to a life preserver, and Waits seems to be the Dylan of my bitter old age. (Does that make sense? Because somehow Dylan isn't the Dylan of my bitter old age...though I'm not sure why.) The other factor is that Scarlett Johansson is ridiculously talented, bright, magnetic, original, and seems to at least circulate in the right artistic crowds and have the right tastes to make vaguely decent music.
My verdict based upon this preview of "Falling Down" is that...I could like it. It's not awful. It's got a little bit of a Spiritualized-meets-Nico thing going on which is interesting, and she's not trying to warble. Also Bowie is mixed in well, and he's not overwhelming her. Still, I need to hear more tracks before I decide if she should be allowed to continue or if she should be confined to Woody Allen Land.
