working out and cars

Biked ~20 miles yesterday: 9 miles to work plus ~10-11 to the Honda place to pick up my car. Timewise, I didn't do too badly - under an hour to work and ~59 minutes to the Honda place - which isn't that bad considering I haven't biked substantially in a while, not to mention the fact that I was on a mountain bike. I was completely wiped when I got home, and when I got to work I couldn't even bike up the last hill, I had to walk it, which I'm not too proud of... Oh well. It probably doesn't help that I've been fighting off a cold/the-sick for the last five or six days...

And in other news, as of two weeks ago, I'm the proud new owner of a 1998 Honda Civic HX 2dr Coupe. I've been looking for a "new or new-to-me" car for a while now (and slowly saving money to that end) and I finally found a Honda that I was interested in and which wasn't $8k for a car with 120k miles on it. It's silver, has 87k miles on it, and, perhaps most importantly, gets 40mpg on the highway. Oh, it also looks sweet and is fun to drive.1 I hope to drive it for many years...

In other news, things are going fairly well in Pittsburgh. On Friday we went out to see the Banff film festival at the Byham, which was pretty damn amazing and has both morleyroarly and I jonesing for the outdoors. Saturday was the 1 year anniversary of morleyroarly and I's engagement, and we had a great morning/afternoon just being around each other, running errands, and the like. I bought her a copy of the new Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard/Ray Price album, "Last of the Breed" and (sort of) surprised her with it, and we ened up cranking it will cooking, changing oil, etc.

Later that night Andrea's band, Stewart, popped in from NYC and we were able to sit down and have an amazing dinner of Indian food which
morleyroarly had cooked before they had to run off for soundcheck down at the bar they were playing at. The show was fun, lots of hashers came out, etc. It was nice to get a chance to hang out with all of Stewart later, including Ryan (their new drummer) who was my best friend in elementary school and whom I haven't seen in 20 years. Wowsa.

Sunday was laid back but got a bit difficult at times (for reasons too various to mention). I think some positives came out of the whole experience, but I don't really have time to write about them and/or deconstruct right now. Suffice to say that while life is good overall, things at home aren't as totally smooth as they could be just yet.

That's the update, and I'm outta here.

1 The HX model Civics have really TALL gears, which is great for gas mileage but means you have to rev it out a bit to get any power/torque. The Owner's Manual helpfully suggests that one should not exceed 102 mph in 3rd, if this gives you any indication. Suffice to say, I'm glad it has a tach.
