I'm in London at the moment. I decided that now was the best time to come and see Gemma for a few days (my logic was all the schools are still in session).
So far I've been and visited Tate Britain and The British Museum, both of which have been on my to-visit list for quite some time.
I surprised myself at the Tate by preferring the pre 1900 stuff by far. I expected to like some of it, and to like most of the more modern stuff but it was almost exactly the opposite. Most of the modern stuff left me cold, it took me roughly half the time to go through those exhibition rooms than it did the older works. The stuff I liked most in the modern had a clear purpose and wasn't just a collection of random lines and splodges. I think my favourite bit of it was the Blake room, where they have some of Robert Blake's paintings and drawings (and there was me thinking he was only a writer) and then more pieces that were inspired by Blake's work. They were pretty cool.
The British Museum today was a bit less successful as a trip. Unfortunately with it being a matter of days now until the schools break up there were loads of school trips there. Few if any of the children wanted to be there and were intent on getting in everyone's way instead of looking at the exhibits. I decided to just go and see a few rooms and then save the rest for next time. I went to see the Elgin Marbles which I've wanted to see for years. They were pretty fab, looking at how much work had gone in them so so long ago. I also went and looked at the displays about Native Americans, at the Chinese jade collection and at the exhibition called 'Living and Dying'. That was all about how different cultures face the challenges that they are faced with in their lives, and was pretty interesting. I thought initially it might be slightly morbid, but it was anything but.
Last night me and Gemma went to the theratre last night to see 'Guys and Dolls'. It was supposed to star Patrick Swayze but he's had to delay his appearances due to a chest infection. It didn't matter in the slightest - the bloke they had playing Nathan Detroit was brilliant, and it was quite nice not to spend the whole night thinking 'that's Patrick Swayze'. The whole cast were great, and both of us really enjoyed watching a show we'd be involved with ourselves.
Graduation last week was a really great day. The weather held which was good seeing as it took us an hour to drive out of the rain. It did feel a bit like it was one photo after another, but for a one off I coped. Feels a bit strange that its all over now, but in a very good way!!
