ToA Replay Notes - #01

Jan 21, 2007 17:33

Okay so. I finished ToA for good the other day and started on my replay. Before I get to the notes, a few various things:

Never did finish the contamination sidequest. AM BITTER. But I beat the final boss so much I think I've seen every possible combination of middle-type endings. I think the best conversation is if Luke gets the final attack in the second battle when Guy and Tear aren't in the party. He does a nice little speech about living for himself. Actually, I THINK he does this even if Guy or Tear are in the party? He just has to get the final strike.

I couldn't carry over the damn Nebilium weapons either. WHAT IS THE POINT IF ONE OF THEM DOESN'T EVEN APPEAR UNTIL RIGHT BEFORE THE FINAL BOSS? Argh.

Okay, now that that's out of the way...

My goal for replay is to assemble enough information that I never need to nag other people to answer my questions again. This is a mixture of character review for EVERYONE and just making sure I understand everything. Primarily, I intend to use this for fic reference. I think I have a decent grasp on all of the characters, but in the course of a 120 hour game you forget a lot of tidbits that could be included in, or inspire fic. There is also the matter of mild things, like what exactly fonons are, how they work, the names and ranks of the side characters, conversations that took place during the game, stuff like that.

So these notes are... anything I found interesting, anything I think I'm likely to forget, anything that inspires me or I think might be helpful for later reference.

It's LONG I'm doing this for the whole game, and this is the only time I'll preface it with a post. But I will be posting all of it incase anyone finds it useful themselves, and then at the very least I'll have easy access to it incase I'm not on my home computer when I suddenly need to know something. Will get a 'ToA' tag and a "awesome info" tag YES I'M GOING TO START USING TAGS.

Notes are done as the game progresses and ordered by where the party is located at the time. It doesn't get any cleaner than that.

Oh, and obviously. Spoilers. IN DETAIL.

Baticul, Fabre Manor

-ND2000 In Kimlasca shall be born one who inherits the power of Lorelei. He will be a boy with royal blood and hair of red. He will be called Light of the Sacred Flame and he will lead Kimlasca-Lanvaldear to glory.

ND2002 The one who would seize glory shall destroy the island upon which he was born. A land by the name of Hod. War shall then persist between Kimlasca and Malkuth for a full cycle of the seasons.

-Game starts on: Remday, Rem-Decan 23, ND2018

-The King is actually the one that ordered Luke to not leave the manor. It seems Uncle was more concerned about his heir than Duke Fabre.

-Lorelei calls Luke a "fragment of his soul" and it's apparently Lorelai that caused the majority of Luke's previous headaches.

-Dorian General Vandesdelca Grants. Whooo. Also Commandant.

-Ion's predecessor is Evenos. He ended the Hod War.

-Guy 'isn't too bad with a sword' but it doesn't sound like Luke trains against him much.

-Luke didn't make much of an effort to learn about the world. He knows what the Hod War is (more or less?) as well as Malkuth, since he doesn't ask about those. But he doesn't know what a Fon Master is.

-Ah, actually Duke Fabre says he's "Sorry to have to keep Luke locked up like this". Another reason Ignobert sucks.

-When Van mentions "leaving everything to [Guy]" he goes on with "The Duke, the King, and Luke's--". Makes me wonder what plans they had beyond just staying under their noses.

-Luke got a premonition of Tear's arrival. I... don't think this ever repeats?

-Also go go Tear and your ability to randomly put an entire estate to sleep, yet only target one monster in battle.

-For all that replicas weren't supposed to be in the Memory of the Planet, Lorelei is pretty free with Luke in the beginning here. It seems like he was the one that caused the hyperresonance that causes Luke and Tear to teleport. Which explains why that effect never happens again.

Tataroo Valley

-A hyperresonance is a 'isofon-induced resonance'. And since Luke is a perfect isofon with the Seventh Fonon... I suppose that's how they explain it away in the game. Nevermind that people using seventh fonons on Luke doesn't do anything like that later on.

Engeve

-Mounts are some sort of lizard/armadillo thing.

-The Tartarus classifies as a 'land dreadnaught'.

-Luke isn't at all hesitant to admit when he doesn't know anything early on. Infact he uses it as a kind of crutch. "I don't know! It's not my fault I've been shut up all my life." Which. While whiny, is fair enough.

Cheagle Woods

-Ancient Ispanian is that old language you go to for all the cool name meanings.

-Locrian Sergeant Tear Grants. 1st Platoon, Oracle Knights Intelligence Division.

-Save points are called 'memory circles'.

-Luke pretty much instantly likes Ion, and defends him a lot for... Luke.

-Jade's level fourty-five when he appears.

-Yulia Jue made the pact with the Cheagles 2000 years ago. I imagine that has to do with the start of the calendar.

Tartarus

-Jade knew about the origin and destination of the hyperresonance that teleported Luke and Tear. Is this a Jade ability or can they somehow track that on the Tartarus?

-Luke is REALLY surprised by the possibility of a war with Malkuth. Despite a general "argh, so annoying" about the kidnapping, he doesn't seem to have anything against them.

-Fonstones are created when the score is read. Daath must be fucking rich.

-To cast a Fonic Arte you "Take fonons from the fon belt into your body and then collide your fonon frequency with their own, generating special power". I don't blame Luke for not getting it.

-The fon belt is the layer of fonstones that surrounds the planet, there are six elements. By opening the body's fon slots, it draws in fonons and then you join them together using a fon verse.

-Ion recognized from the beginning that Luke felt 'familiar'.

-Jade's suspected Luke of being a replica from the moment he heard about his memory loss.

-Basically, Ion is Liberal and Mohs is Republican >D

-For all that Luke is a brat, he really don't throw his rank around that much.

-The Cheagles taught Yulia the art of controlling the seventh fonon. I assume this translates to "how to read the score".

-They use the metric system on Auldrant.

-Colonel Jade Curtiss, Commander of the Third Division of the Malkuth Imperial Forces. Jade the Necromancer.

-Is it just me, or does Luke glow when he's distressed? Lack of control of his hyperreasonance?

-The seventh fonon is the fonon of sound, it was just discovered... two thousand years ago. Thanks Mieu.

-Asch wanted to kill Luke (and Tear? Knowing who Tear is?). O Asch. When Legretta reminds him that it's against orders, we get that glowy "Loralei is talking" sound and he changes his mind.

-Luke might suck at everything else, but he has a natural, innate sense of the value of life. The only thing he seems to knowingly value. I wonder where that comes from. Regressed knowledge that he's a fake? Seems a little unlikely...

-Jade's name for the operation to shut down the Tartarus is "Corpse Hunt" >D O Jade.

-In his own way, Jade eases up on Luke once he finds out his reasons for being scared to fight. It's rather cute.

-ooh, nifty. Jade can make his spear disappear and reappear in his hands.

-Guy is clearly having fun with his arrival.

-Luke hasn't been gone very long. How exactly did Guy end up in MALKUTH looking for him? It's been like two days!

-A hundred and fourty soldiers on the Tartarus when it was captured. Half the usual number.

Field, Malkuth Territory

-Guy knew that Luke disappeared into Malkuth territory. Van is also a seventh fonist and is probably the one that told him. So I'm guessing Jade was also able to track the hyperresonance that way.

-Luke says "N-no more." at the end battle sequence when he first has to try to kill someone. Aww. (And then Jade says to 'finish him' and Luke can't and Tear gets hurt protecting him. Aww.)

-Whatever Guy's issues with Luke at this point, he doesn't hesitate at all to help him.

-Jade offers that they will protect Luke until they get to Baticul, and assures that there is no shame in running and saving your own life. Despite that he says it in that condescending voice of his, I think he'd being pretty genuine. This is Jade, afterall.

-Guy is the first person to recognize outright that being tossed out into the world might be tough on Luke.

-When Luke asks how many people Guy has killed, Guy says "who knows?" so I imagine despite leaving in the manor he's probably spent his fair share of time outside. I imagine he typically only would kill bandits though, on travels.

-Tear is always waking Luke up. I guess he tends to sleep in.

-Luke mentions that he only writes in his diary so that his mom and the other won't worry. That's rather cute.

-"In other words, you don't have to fight, Luke." hmm...

St. Binah

-The anteater mount things sure SOUND a lot like horses.

-Six God-Generals are: Largo the Black Lion, Dist the Reaper (Rose), Sync the Tempest, Arietta the Wild, Legretta the Quick, Asch the Bloody.

-Guy notes that "Luke is both equally rude and demanding to servants and those above him" >D

-The Sephiroth are the world's ten most powerful fon slots. "They're the planet's vital points. Places where memory particles, a kind of planetary fuel, concentrated and fonons gather easily."

-Luke can't EVER be nice without someone getting on his case about it. No wonder he acts like a jerk >D

-Jade suspects Ion is a replica from the beginning too.

-Aaand that Guy isn't 'just a servant'. God Jade, you're obnoxious. LET PEOPLE HAVE THEIR SECRETS.

-Scorers apparently get amnesty.

Field, Malkuth Territory

-Yulia's fonic hymns are apparently more or less rumors. Only Tear and Van know them?

-"When one who truly appreciates the symbolism and meaning sings a verse, it draws a map to hidden wisdom."

-The hymns themselves are handed down among Yulia's descendants.

-Guy heard about this stuff 'way back'. Van?

Kaitzur

-Guard: *refuses to let Anise past the boarder*
Anise: "You better watch your back >\"
Ion: "Anise, Luke can hear you."
Anise: "Oh! It's my darling! ♥ My prince! ♥"
Ion knows what Anise is all about >D

-Despite claiming to like women, Guy still freaks out just WATCHING Anise glomp Luke.

-When Asch attacks he goes STRAIGHT for Luke. Bitter much?

-Asch has super leaping abilities.

-The Seventh Fonston is part of the score Yulia read for the world 2000 years ago. The Score was so long it took up seven fonstones, each the size of a mountain. These stones eventually broke apart and fell to the earth or became the fon belt.

-War was started when Malkuth and Kimlasca both tried to claim the fonstones that fell to the earth.

-Yulia herself hid the seventh fonstone after she read the score. Likely since it foretells the end of the world.

Kaitzur Port

-This part is a little confusing. Arietta destroys the ship at Asch's request. Sync and Arietta kidnap the man who can fix the ship in order to make Luke go to the place where he was created. Van has no use for Luke to find out he was a replica... I can't remember what Sync and Dist get out of it when they examine Luke? Asch's reasons for wanting Luke to go there are obvious though. However, I do think this is actually against Van's plans.

Choral Castle

-I don't think I gave Guy enough credit on my first play through. He's definitely not AS infatuated with Luke as he later gets, but he clearly has a sense of concern for him. It's a mixture of wanting him to be alright, but not wanting to be buddies, I think.

-Luke didn't know Guy's parents were dead until it comes up at Choral Castle.

-It could just be that Jade doesn't want to bring up fomicry, and of course he doesn't want to tell Luke he's a replica unless he's sure. But Jade really DOES avoid explaining things. Ever.

-Guy doesn't show any interest in fonic technology when it's possible it's even remotely connected to Luke.

-Dist 'opened Luke's synchronized fon slots', plus stole some data, presumably from the computers in Choral Castle on how Luke was created. Opening the fon slots was to make it so Luke could learn to control hyperresonance? In which case Van planned on this detour, I thought it might be Asch acting on his own. Or maybe it WAS Asch acting on his own and van just took advantage of it?

-Sync isn't particularly concerned that Guy saw his face.

-And Sync says it was an 'unauthorized mission'. Sync's not really the sort to lie.

-For all that Luke acts like a little snot, everyone the group, including Jade, genuinely seems to like him just fine. They don't start to really loath him until Akzeriuth. And... before he blowse place up, they put up Luke's bad attitude toward Akzeriuth pretty darn well.

-Luke IS stupid. But... he's also still reasonably quick. Considering how UTTERLY IGNORANT he was his entire life, when he puts his mind to it he learns about the world pretty fast.

Kaitzur Port

-They use carrier pigeons for messages. So no fonic telephones, huh?

En Route to Baticul

-Hearing mysterious glowy voices is so common for Luke that he goes on about his day without even questioning it.

-Guy mentions that Luke is 'completely different' from when he was young, and then "I'm just glad you're you". Did Asch piss him off as a kid? It seems a little strange, since Asch was apparently such an inspired young kid. I imagine he was still a little grumpy but...
Is it possible Asch didn't value his friendships until after he lost them?

-Jade asks Luke "What would you do, if you weren't really you?" And then quickly brushes it aside when Luke is confused. It's rather cute. Jade's very genuinely concerned about this. I kind of wonder how the big reveal would have gone if Luke hadn't screwed himself over with everyone by destroying a city.

-And then follows it up with "Someday you may hate me enough to want to kill me. ...or perhaps you already do." Oh Jade D=

-Ships have propellers on the TOP.

-Luke is ALWAYS nicest to Ion. It's... really cute.

-Having Luke answer Anise's question of "What do you think of Tear?" with "I'd say she's my type" hurt me where my soul is.

-Courtesy of Tear: "Combining fonons, basic particles of sound which make up all matter, with memory particles from the planet's core yields an enormous amount of energy.
A device was made to supply fuel to the world by passing those particles through the fon belt. The Planet Storm.
The planet Storm caused a mutation in the six fonon elements and the memory particles. And that was the birth of the Seventh Fonon."

-Luke "isn't a true Seventh Fonist" but is capable of using the Seventh Fonon. Is he not a 'true fonist' just because he's never learned? Asch can use Fonic Artes.

-Healers and Scorers are all Seventh Fonists.

-Luke is more like his... more genuine self when people try to apologize sincerely to him, act sincerely kind to him, or when murder is involved.

-Why exactly does Lorelei feel compelled to force Luke to use hyperresonance?

-Incomplete hyperresonance is what teleported Tear and Luke.

-"A hyperresonance is a power that occurs when two Seventh Fonons interact. It can destroy and reform any matter."
Can typically only occur with two seventh fonists

Chesedonia

-York has a mouse on his head. I never noticed this.

-Van can cook! And he taught Tear. Hoho.

-On Auldrant, you can make fried chicken with fish.

-Jade finds the possibility of reading someone's diary 'enjoyable'.

Aston's Mansion, Chesedonia

-Aston is the head of the Chesedonian Merchant's Guild?

-The Fon Master (The original Ion, or one of the earlier fon masters?) helped with the establishment of Chesedonia on the boarder, in return the Merchant's Guild contributes large amounts of money to Daath. The Order also enforces the recognition of Daath as an autonomous state.

-Considering the size of Daath, I doubt they have much in the way of export. Religion and political neutrality is probably where all their money comes from.

-...no one listens to Dist. Ever.

-Dist has a revenge journal

En Route to Baticul

-Lorelei's fonon frequency is pi

-Lorelei is the name of the 'aggregate sentience of the Seventh Fonon'. Note to self: look up 'aggregate'.

-"When a certain amount of a particular fonon gathers together, it becomes sentient". So are Sylph, Ifrit and the rest all sentient too?
Controlling it causes the high-level fonic arts.

-Lorelei's existence is hypothetical

-Somehow no two frequencies are ever the same. I imagine they get down to realllly close measurements though, considering they went to pi by like, twenty numbers.

-Isofons don't exist unless artificially created.

-Isofons also create hyperresonances? Is it only isofons of the seventh fonon? Or is that redundant, since fomicry requires the seventh fonon?

-Nix that, Jade says you can't produce isofons in fomicry, meaning however they make isofons artificially (which has been done often enough that no one is surprised by it) it isn't through fomicry. I'm guessing there is a way to create something with a specific frequency? According to Jade, isofon research is being looked into for weapons development, but it's still in the theoretical stages.

-According to Van, hyperresonance occurs when two seventh fonons interact. It's possible this only happens due to both fonons having the same frequency, but then you would think the same would happen with first fonons and so on?
But according to Jade hyperresonance occurs with the interaction of isofons.
Possible Van just simplified it for Luke's sake? I'm confused.

-Barrelow X has an AI which doesn't surprise anyone.

-...but not a very good one.

-Dist's nose runs when he gets mad >D

-Jade has a photographic memory? Wouldn't surprise me.

Baticul

-Goldberg is commander of the 1st Divison, Kimlasca-Lanvaldear Royal Forces.

-"King Ingobert the Sixth"
This reminds me, isn't Lanvaldear the family name of the Royalty? I wonder why they never go by it. If Luke became King would it become Kimlasca-Fabre? Or would he take on the name Lanvaldear?

-"Brigadier General Jozette Cecille"

-"Ionian Sergeant Anise Tatlin, Oracle Knights Fon Master Guard"

-Jade had a battle against Cecille in Northern Chesedonia. Jade won.

-Baticul was built in a depression in the ground created when a fonstone fell from the sky.

-Darkwings were originally the circus troupe "Black Dream"

-Jade: "Anyone who interferes with others' romances should get kicked by a horse and die." >D

Fabre Manor, Baticul

-For all that Duke Fabre has a horrible reputation, what with Guy's past and the fact that he basically ignored Luke growing up, as far as I can recall he never acts unreasonable in the game. He's genuinely glad that Luke returns safely, genuinely glad to see Asch again, he doesn't do anything to Guy when he finds out who he is, Pere keeps his job though it must have been Pere that brought Guy to the Manor. He doesn't do anything to Tear other than suspect her (reasonable) when she teleports Luke halfway across the world. He's distant but never really takes an offensive tone.

-Natalia is WAY more stuck-up princessy at her appearance. I suppose getting out into the world humbles her a lot? But she's still considerate, more so than Luke, and we know she's done a lot for her people, so maybe it's just that she loses the royalty attitude.

-Luke doesn't like listening to banter much.

-Tear swears by "Yulia and Lorelei"

-Jade recognized Pere.

-The Jewel of Gardios was brought back with the enemy commander's head.

-Luke returns to Baticul on: Gnomeday, Gnome-Decan 2, ND2018

-Auldrant has 13 months in a year, each month is roughly sixty days long. Luke left on Rem Decan 23, was gone through Sylph Decan and Undine Decan, and returned on the second of Gnome Decan. This equals up to (roughly) 160 days for just the first part of the game. DIDN'T FEEL LIKE THAT, DID IT?

-Guy mentions that 'work piled up' while he was out looking for Luke. And earlier that he has to go 'kiss ass' because the White Knights are mad that the search for Luke was left up to a lowly servant. What, exactly, does he DO?

Baticul

-On Jade's spear: "It's a fusion arte that utilizes the contamination effect."
"The Contamination effect is an effect where the fonons and elements of matter separate and refuse together."

-Guy notes that 'this is like the fusion property of materials used in synthesis', must be a part of fonic technology?

-Because the fonons and elements that form up organic and inorganic material are different, Jade can temporarily fuse the spear into the outerlayer of his right arm.
Doing this is dangerous because typically the body rejects the effect, it can cause mental damage, even insanity.

-Along with rumors that Jade collects corpses to use in experiments to revive the dead, there are ones that say the entire third division is made up of undead.

-Guy was apparently the only one searching for Luke when he disappeared, the White Knights weren't very happy about this. However, that means Duke Fabre approved of Guy being the only one to go searching. So question: Is it because Duke Fabre knew his son was destined to die and didn't expect him to return? Or because he trusts Guy enough to only need him to do the searching? A truly concerned father would have sent out everyone available, but I can see Guy, being more or less the one who raised Luke, being trusted enough to take care of it.

Questions?

-Tear's Fonic Hymns use a different fonon each, but they are the work of a Seventh Fonist. When she uses them I believe Jade mentions she's using the seventh fonon, but according to the info on the Artes page each of the seven hymns uses a different fonon. Which is it? Or what am I not getting?
