I love travelling. I love the airport process: leaving home, getting there, security theater, getting to the gate, boarding, just all of it, all the steps, and once you're out the door from home, you're just in the river and moving along, feet first so as to better encounter any unexpected bumps. Right now, though, I feel deeply, yes, deeply unsettled. The first thing I need to do at the airport is get my antigen test done. My appointment for that is 5:15 AM (flight is at 7 AM); it takes ~10-15 minutes to get the result. I am fairly sure I am negative: I barely get out, I consistently mask, and I have no symptoms, nor does anyone in my household. The only one who really mixes with people is Benito, at school and after-school. That feels like a WHOLE lot of little petri dishes mixing with my little delightful petri dish who mashes his face against mine all the time. Then again, no symptoms at all and no notice of contact at school or after-school. So, all I can do is get 'er done and truly sincerely hope this all doesn't go up in smoke.
I have KN95 masks (6 of them for a 3 days trip) and will wear one consistently through my travels. I fly YVR -> SFO (I've been saying SEA but I have been wrong) -> ORD -> BWI with ~1 hr. layovers. My sister-in-law informs us that Maryland is considered a high COVID risk state. I am already not seeing any students in person next week, but I'm wondering if I should simply plan not to go into the office, either, out of an abundance of caution? I'll take my home antigen test when I get home... no, maybe better to wait until Wednesday night to see if I develop anything by then? *shrug* I'll ask people on Wednesday what the best course of action is.
I was about to get a PCR test today, to get a result within ~48-72 hours, which would be pre-boarding my final flight from the US back into Canada on Tuesday, except that the test was going to be at 3 PM and my final flight home is 6:25 PM, so it would be outside the damn 72 hour window and would therefore not be valid. I had to call my SIL and have her help me find a place to get the PCR test on Monday morning. I did that, got it set up for 7:55 AM Monday morning, which should give it 24-36 hours before 6:25 PM Tuesday. (The testing site said <24 hr test result, so I'll double check that when I get there.)
Oh, and also, I'm going to a funeral.
My parents will be there, and returning to the airport by 6:30 PM Monday. My sister is flying in Monday (due to getting a PCR test today) and will arrive in time to get a ride directly from the airport to the cemetery. I will at least get to spend a little chill time with my brother and his family, which has been sorely lacking the last 10 years.
This is a terrible reason to travel, and there is one agenda item, but by God I am going to hug people. I am the least exposed out of all of them (thank you, BC!) and I'm getting my hugs in before the cooties get too far up my triple-vaxxed and super-masked nostrils. I will also toss all my clothes from the trip directly into the laundry upon returning home.
