The Monkees were a show - that's how they were created. When it started out they weren't really a band, they just played one on TV. As time went on they started learning to play instruments and writing some of their own songs and putting out albums that were actually conceived as albums rather than just put together from the songs that were recorded for the show - but in a way, they were the world's first boy band. They didn't form on their own, they were just cast in a TV show.
