Last week I read a book about the Donner Party.
Never was there a tale of more woe....
Tamsen Donner would not leave her husband's side. He was 62 and very sick. She was 45, strong, and could have left, kept her kids from being orphans, saved her own life.
He should have shot himself.
James Reed made it out fine and dandy. He was lucky. Long before the Donners hit the Sierras, he killed John Snyder in a kerfuffle. The Party exiled him, so he rode ahead.
No redemption in this story.
Well, except that it's a tale of survival. People doing what it takes to live. Whatever it takes.
Terrible things.
