Finally managed to watch the Filipino dub of Gintama.
What can I say, I deliberately watched it to check just how much it sucked.
And oh dear...
IT'S PROBABLY ONE OF THE WORST DUBS EVER.
TRANSLATION
The translation is bad. I mean, the way the lines were translated in context is bad. Shinpachi's retorts end up really lame (or that could also be the VA's fault), some lines are Taglish when they could've been handled better, and they didn't even make an effort to shorten sentences to fit the characters' mouth movements.
SOUND EFFECTS
Sound effects are clear, but the problem is... they're still noticeably softer than the VA's voices. Therefore, it makes the dub sound really unnatural.
PRONUNCIATION
Some names are foolishly mispronounced. Like Ginto-ki and Kachu-ra.
Zura became Jira (WTF) and Shinsengumi is now Shinshen, err rather, Shinsen group.
VOICE ACTORS
Gintoki's VA sucks. A lot. He's just reading the script. He doesn't even try to imitate Gintoki's voice, in my opinion. Gintoki, who should sound bored, sounds emotionless. Even in action scenes, his shouts are a little too forced.
Kagura's VA tries to put in an effort, but it's insufficient. It's basically a mature woman with a high pitch voice. It's obvious that she didn't study Kagura's voice in the least. She could've made it more childish-sounding with a bit of Chinese accent.
Shinpachi's VA... is the same as Gin-chan's? They sound awfully the same. Yes, Shinpachi's voice goes as deep and as mature as Gintoki's.
Katsura's VA is quite okay. The only time Zura actually sounds different is when he raps or tries to carry out some kind of lame joke, anyway.
Hijikata's VA is also all right. His pronunciation is pretty much good too. I wish he'd lessen the gruffness a bit though.
Kondo's VA could be better, but it's not as bad as the main three so it's acceptable.
Okita's voice is OVERFLOWING WITH EMOTION. Contrary to Gin-chan's voice, Okita's VA puts in too much emotion on Okita. Which should not be the case because Okita is almost always deadpan.
Sacchan's VA is okay. Just that... why does she sound like Kagura? Don't tell me...!
OTOSE SOUNDS LIKE A FUKKEN TEENAGER. Nuff said.
Catherine sounds like a normal woman. Did they even listen to the original?
And what's more, THE MALE VOICES FROM THE EXTRAS ARE ALWAYS GRUFF-SOUNDING. Extras matter too, damn it!
OTHERS
ABS-CBN seemed to have been debating a lot about Gintama's airing on Philippine TV because it had a lot problems to deal with... a confusing episode arrangement in the beginning, several inappropriate scenes, and hard-to-translate cultural jokes. BUT DESPITE THAT AND KNOWING THAT IT WOULD BE DIFFICULT AND THEREFORE SUCKY, THEY STILL PUSHED THROUGH WITH IT. They are dubbing for the sake of dubbing. ARGH.

I don't care if the art is quality, if the plot sucks, and if I'm only staying because of fanservice. Amano has kept my fujoshi side happy.
The reasonable side says
- What was the exact point of GHOST but make Byakuran stronger and give a reason to kill 2 of the Funeral Wreaths? His short appearance could've been omitted and nothing would've changed. I will not be surprised if his entire existence is forgotten after a few chapters. (C'mon, I want 10069GHOST but still, he was too insignificant)
- FUKKEN QUALITY
- I assume that Kikyou will live. He's gotten so far. He deserves it. I'm liking him more and more as his screentime(?) increases and his character develops.
- Byakuran and another new outfit. What is with his zipper and belt fetish?
- I truly wish Tsuna would stay out of the way sometimes.
- WTF WHITE FINGER IS THIS A GUNDAM REFERENCE
- Angel!Byakuran is not so bad. It actually suits him~
The unreasonable side says
- 10069X HAS MORE LEVERAGE NOW FUCKYEAH
Byakuran thinks that it's such a pity that XANXUS-kun and Mukuro-kun are submitting to Tsuna. He'd rather they submit to him, of course
- Byakuran refers to everyone by title except Mukuro-kun~

Went to Otaku Expo today.
Nothing much to say. The event lacked a lot of things -- program fillers (80% of the time, the program does not exist), booth rentors/sponsors (less than 20, I think), and a significant amount of layout preparation. Add to that the lack of visitors and cosplayers too. I blame it on poor publicity.
Not sure if putting less booths inside was intentional, but even if it was to purposely give con-goers some space, it failed due to their bad layout. The space allocation screwed big time.
Btw, I spotted the Hibari cosplayer I saw in AME and asked for his photo again. I'm surprised that he remembered me. Is my face that uncommon or what? I was wearing a wig back then, too. Anyway, he's probably one of the few decent Reborn cosplayers here. I like his portrayal of Hibari even if it isn't as fierce as it should be. I am tempted to invite him to our group AAAAAAAA
In other news, I bought the dress!Tieria PPP ('cause it was cheap).
Still not sure what the hook thing is for. It's in all PPPs.
(Maybe I should've bought another one, huh? I kind of liked the Mr. Bushido and the Billy. Even the Setsuna, actually.)
P.S. When I go to cons, I realize just how much my fandoms are underrated here. (Except the Reborn one, 'cause it grew a little too fast over here)
