Hi there. :) My name is Jessica and I am going to be moving to Portsmouth, Ohio and thought I would check LJ for locals. Your name came up. :) Do you mind if I add you as a friend?? Let me know. Thanks!
Hi Jessica..nice to meet you. Sorry it took me so long to reply to your post. I had seen it when you posted it, and I meant to reply then, but sometimes I'm ditzy and forget things. Did you ever move to Portsmouth? It would be fine if you wanted to add me as a friend.
Hi there! Thanks for getting back to me. Me and my husband are moving to Portsmouth the end of April. :) I can't believe it's almost here. How do you like it there????
I absolutely love it here. We originally moved to Akron, OH from North Dakota, but I didn't care for Akron. The weather here is beautiful. The only complaint I have is that to find a mall, Border's, Best Buy etc. you have to travel to a larger city. I like road trips though, so I don't mind so much. I have found that this place, although technically Yankee territory, is really 'the South'.
What brings you two to this area? I saw that you are involved in the SCA....I was just getting involved in it in ND before we moved...I love anything to do with history or sci-fi/fantasy.
My husband's family lives there. His dad hasn't been in the best of health lately and we wanted to be closer to him for that reason. Plus living here in Massachusetts is outrageously expensive. We can actually afford to buy a home there. :) The only thing I am worried about it finding work there. I hear the economy isn't that great there. I guess driving to Ashland or Huntinington isn't that far is it??
We have been involved with the SCA for a few years now and we love it. We are hoping to find some what local groups out there. We just got married in September and we had a medieval wedding. It was beautiful and the wedding I always wanted. We are both into history and sci-fi/fantasy too. :)
The economy kind of sucks here, but it depends on what kind of work you are looking for. What are you looking for? I couldn't find work here with my backround unless I wanted to teach or go into nursing, neither of which do I find appealing right now. Hopefully you will have better luck.
I am just looking for office/clerical type work. I have 7+ years experience at the company in Boston that I work for as an administrative assistant right now. The biggest adjustment is going to be making so much less there. :( My husband is a carpenter so hopefully he will have mush better luck than I do at first.
Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions about Portsmouth. His family has been good about it but I feel like I needed another voice on it, you know?
My next door neighbor is a union carpenter, and so is my friend's brother-in-law....down here it is a lot of 'who you know' rather than what. I'll ask next time I see either of them if there's any work down here for your hubby. If he does independant work I also know of people looking to have things built...like built in shelves etc. Let me know.
As for office work, I see jobs in the paper sometimes. It may take a bit, but I don't think you'll have a problem.
As far as making less goes, it is balanced out by the very low cost of living. I have a huge 3 bedroom house that I pay $485 a month to rent....and that's spendy for this area. You'll be shocked at how cheap it is to live here.
If you guys have any other questions feel free to ask. Good luck with the move.
I can't believe the prices there for rent! We are looking now for a house to rent. But they seem to go fast. His sister and dad are looking. We pay $1000 a month here for a 2 bedroom apartment!!!!
Is the new Irish pub opened up downtown yet? We loved the little brewery on 2nd Street.
I just finally noticed the Irish pub last week, but I haven't gone yet. I am so Irish I'm suprised I don't have potatoes growing out of my butt. My mother cried and didn't speak to me for 2 months when I married a German guy. She's over it now, but I was the first in my entire family to marry outside of my heritage. It's her own fault for moving me to North Dakota. Up there you have only Germans and Nowregians to choose from. LOL.
I saw in your journal that you used to maintain the Sobriety community....I knew your lj name was familiar...my hubby xmacx is a member of that community.
Yes. It's insane the money we pay out here for rent.
My hubby is Irish, so I am Irish by marriage. LOL I think I have a little from my mom's side. I love everything Celtic though.
I started that community years ago. I haven't been involved with it for a long time. I went thru a rough patch back then and thought it was a great idea to start a community geared towards recovery. :)
When I was younger I was an Production Control clerk and worked in an office...now I am a calculus class away from a B.S. in biology with a chemistry minor. When we lived in Akron I was invited to tour the BCI crime lab. My forensics prof is the Director there. Had we stayed I would probably be working there. There is no crime lab in this area though, and I don't want to commute, so now I am mostly a bum/stay-at-home mom...hehe. I can remember watching Quincy as a small child and wanting to be him. I absolutely love any kind of puzzles, logic problems, mind games, etc. so crime science was a perfect fit. I used to own a small bead store in Kent though, and I am thinking of opening one here. I love to make jewelry...it's peaceful. Sorry...I'm rambling..LOL!
How cool. Too bad you can't find work there for it. What about in Huntington?
A bead store?? That's great. I recently got into making jewelry. I am still not that great but I made some necklaces for my SCA household. See:

I can't really commute right now because my hubby is only home a few days every two weeks, so it's just me with the kids. I might be willing to commute in a few years though...My son will be a junior next year and my daughter a freshman. After they are gone I will have more time and less complications.
Cool necklace...amber and garnet..or is that carnelian?...good stones. What is the pendant? It looks like you do good work...if you want to learn some good tricks and more techniques I would be glad to show you. I love beading....my husband thinks I'm on crack but I'm obsessed enough that I could roll around nekkid in them LOL.
Thanks. It's amber and garnet with a pewter wolf head charm. The household is called DragonWulf and the colors are red and gold so I thought it was a good combo. I need to learn a lot more. I don't know how to finish off peices very clean. My husband made me this beautiful walnut bead chest for my supplies. I will post a pic soon. I would love to learn more.
It's great that we have some things in common. I would love to meet up when we move to Ohio. :)
P.S. Have you gone to any SCA events in Ohio? We are looking to get into local groups once we move.
