Think about morality enough and you'll get really confused.  I've gone around in circles with right and wrong, objective and subjective, should and must.  What makes a good person? What kind of thoughts does a good person have?  Is it okay for me to question an issue when no one else does?  These are things no one can really answer for you--indeed ( Read more... )

Why thank you, Dark Jessica! I wish I'd write more, but I get inspiration in fits and bursts. Is that a phrase? It seems like one.

It's not "Those terrorists have no respect for human life." I heard that a lot my senior year of high school (specifically in September of 2001), and my personal thoughts on the matter were guilt-inducing, to say the least. "We know what they did," I thought to myself, "but they also gave their own lives. And even if they hadn't, what was their reasoning? What did they value more than life? Could it be that they do value life, but felt it had to be sacrificed for something greater?" I know now that I'm not fundamentally immoral (and neither is any human being on this planet, goddamnit); the very act of questioning absolute evil reveals how deeply concerned with morality I am.Amen ( ... )

I agree with you, Sir Royal. It would have been pretty hard to justify wars, of course, if Bush were like, "We are in a time of great tragedy, but let's remember that the terroristically inclined folks were just doing their best." Diametrically opposed good and evil make it easy to sell a point. The seedlings are there naturally, of course--I think anger and desire for revenge are very basic and understandable urges--but they can be harnessed and magnified if need be.

But I do wonder, of course, whether it was seen by Bush and Co. as something that could justify a desired venture or as a true tragedy done by truly evil people.
