I was raised as a Jehovah's Witness. I was taught not to salute the flag, not to say the pledge of allegiance, and not to uphold my country over God. Years later I learned to think for myself and felt personally uncomfortable celebrating a country so full of corruption and hypocrisy.
As such, I have always been suspicious of patriotism.
But not today.
Today I drove around until I found an American flag and this evening I hung it from my balcony.
I am so proud of you, America.
Bush has been the president of my adulthood, so far in this life. It's been a sad thing to be a young person, searching for pride and not finding it. I really, really want to know what it feels like to hope that my contributions can make this world a better place. That's all I really want out of life anyway.
Well, that and some fun.
