You never know what your kids are thinking until they tell you.

We took the kids with us to the funeral for my husband's great-grandfather. I had the task of preparing my daughter for the day. We talked about why people die, why we have funeral services, why we bury people and some of the things she might see.

They behaved well during the service. That is saying a lot considering the fact that the service was over 2 hours long. She sat quietly and colored in her little notebook when she got bored. My son took of his socks and shoes and played quietly on the floor.

As we followed the procession to the cemetery, we went over what she could expect. She is as cool as can be. When we get to the grave site, she complains that she can't see the casket and we walk around behind the minister. She was unimpressed by the releasing of the doves. As we walk away from the grave site, she is disappointed that she did not see the casket lowered. I walk away from the crowd with her to explain that sometimes it is to painful for the family to watch the casket being buried.

She said, "But Mommy they have to bury him quick so the bugs don't get to him."
