I've been doing a few experiments comparing similar scents from BPAL and Possets, to see whether they are different enough to keep both or whether one is better than the other on my skin. It's been interesting at times.
My first side-by-side was BPAL's Mama-Ji and Possets' Over-the-Rhine. Both are strong incense blends with a floral element to them.
When smelled one after the other, Mama-Ji is a much, much gentler scent overall. The incense, spice and floral balance very well on me. Over-the-Rhine is much more strongly incense, almost pungent during the first part of the drydown stage. My husband's opinion was that Over-the-Rhine was a nice smell, but not a good perfume smell. So, Over-the-Rhine goes into the sale pile and Mama-Ji goes back into the box.
The second side-by-side was BPAL's Harlot and Possets' Cadmium Red. Both scents are based on cinnamon and roses. I tried Harlot ages ago and liked it, but sold or swapped the imp since it didn't make my first cut. But I picked up a new imp at the recent Swim & Sniff.
The difference is astounding. Cadmium Red is lush roses coated in crushed Red-Hots. Harlot has some cinnamon to its rose, but the green-stem of the roses totally overwhelms the spice. No contest: Cadmium Red stays and Harlot goes.
More experimenting will happen as I find descriptions that match up.
