This morning I got a call from my cousin saying she has a baby rattle snake in her back yard. I asked her a few questions and determined she was right. She was calling me on her way to work so I swung by on my way to take my kids to swimming and diving lessons.
I looked under the bush where she last saw it and voila sure enough there was a Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. Just a youngster, maybe 2 years old at best. About 2 feet long with the classic diamond shaped head and the rattle sound that is unmistakable. I grabbed my bucket and broom for the extraction. I got the snake flushed out of the bush after a few attempts with the broom handle. The good thing about Rattlesnakes they do not try to slither off when you get them in the open like most snakes. The Rattlesnake stands it's ground ready to inject you with the venom. Unfortunately for this little guy I had a broom to pin his pointy venomous side to the dirt where I could reach in and grab hold of his neck just behind his head. With snake in hand I placed him into the bucket and headed off to the open desert where he will be much happier.
Here is a couple pictures of the friendly little guy:
A bit pissed off.. A good shot of the tongue and rattle going a million miles per hour.
Back in his element. They blend into the desert quite well.
Don't get anywhere near that mouth!!!
