So, I found out that the fucktard who works opposite of me at the hotel's getting fired today. This would normally be a good thing, as this shithead sniped the fulltime position that I was gunning for back when it came open in February (a decision that the management has been regretting ever since, as it was quickly evident that he was woefully incompetent), but I found out about it via getting asked to cover for tonight. My first night off after a 12-day stretch, following working his holiday last week and a detail the next day. 13 fucking nights in a row. They're fucked if they want me to work tomorrow, tho. I've already got plans to go see Pirates, and I'm damn well not giving that up so I can work a 19 fucking day stretch.
Further, this brings back the possibility of them offering me full time there, which I'm... Conflicted about. On paper, it looks like a good deal; a buck an hour more than what I get out at the school and about half the commute, which is welcome during these days of $3 a gallon gas prices. but there are some less tangible elements that leave me wary. There's just so much shit going on there that I'd just as soon not have to deal with. The various snitfits between employees, some ex-employees being weird, management being useless fucks, the new ownership being retarted... The place is just a fucking drama factory. And that's not even getting into the shit the guests can and often will pull, or the stupid little 'chores' the management's been dumping on the full time guy so that they can feel they're getting their money's worth out of him. The most I have to worry about at the school, 95% of the time, is how to stave off the overwhelming boredom. About half of the night there I'm effectively getting paid to watch TV. The 50-minute drive each way is a bitch, but it is somewhat leavened by the Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us that I pass on the way in, all of which have been a lot more profitable than the craptastic Wally's near the hotel. And beyond that, I've been working at that damn hotel off and on for the past four fucking years now. I'm starting to get sick of the place just doing two nights a week, so full time doesn't look all that rosy.
And as an added annoyance, this comes the day after I finally confirmed all the swapped days I needed next month for Ozzfest and my birthday, throwing those into question again. Their timing is fucking impeccable.
Iunno. At this point, I'm not at all sure what they're even gonna offer me, much less what I'm gonna do. If I can get certain concessions out of them I might be a bit more open to taking the full-time position, but those would be a) Saturday and Sunday off, b) less to no gruntwork, and c) no bitching if I never wear the tie specified in the dress code. I'm not sure how well those would fly. Particularly the days off, but those are my sticking point. Just about everyone else I know, friends and family, has weekends off, and I've been trying to get them myself for a while now, but couldn't get my counterparts to give up their days. So those'd be about the only things that would make this position more appealing than what I've currently got. The fact that they're also two of the more obnoxious days to work at a hotel, particularly during the summer/fall wedding season, is also a minor consideration. But we'll see how things go.
