Birthday Buildings is an annual column that highlights Shanghai’s centenarian buildings - that is, those that were built one hundred years ago. This post is backdated by 2023.
The construction statistics for 1923, from the SMC Report.
• The year started with a bang. On January first, Chinese Cotton Goods Exchange opened on the corner of Avenue Edward VII and Honan Road:

• In May 2023, Brunner Mond Co.’s lavish new building opened on Szechuen Road:
