Explorers in Wechat group【城市】“无人区”探访团 have been discussing the Tea Merchants’ Guildhall 上海茶食商业同业公会, in Shanghai’s Old Town. Back when I was compiling
the book on the old town’s surviving historic streets and architecture I did not include this building. On the edge of the old town, at the corner of North Yingxun Road and Zhonghua Road, there was not much old architecture and no interesting stories about the neighborhood. But in 2024, the building suddenly comes to prominence, having resisted thus far the relentless demolition of the rest of the area and becoming the last - and precarious - landmark in these parts.
