Just came across this curious book of Shanghai shikumen doors and gables, photographed mostly in Huangpu District (including the Old Town). The photographs are organized not by the location but by the architectural principle: plant motifs (floral scrolls, flowers, ivy, garlands, bonsai, tree branches, grapes, wheat stalks, etc.), geometric motifs (scallops, stars, suns, hearts, squares, diamonds, waves, etc.), animal motifs (birds, bats, butterflies, fish scales, shells, clams, etc.), objects (bagua, ruyi, mirrors, eight treasures, arrows, coins, etc.).
An example of an entry, from the demolished Dongjiadu:
凌明里 老硝皮弄13弄(已拆)
门额配花环与弓形草饰,卷耳支托。31号为二间一厢式街角石库门,砖木结构二层楼房,弄堂较窄,长约25米。
Fortunately for geeks like us, the book is
online.
