...is up on Building Russian Shanghai. In his
autobiography, Pakidoff mentions starting as Draughtsman at Elliott Hazzard in 1930 and attending a correspondence course in Architecture in 1933-1937. He failed to graduate because of the shortage of tuition money, but in 1937 he was hired as Assistant Architect by “a British construction firm” and soon promoted to Architect. Having spent three years at this unnamed firm, he was engaged with the construction of “a number of tall buildings” and won two competitions for high-rises. The Japanese occupation period was marked by job scarcity and little construction activity, but in 1946 Igor Pakidoff was hired as Architect at Spence, Robinson and Partners. He worked in this capacity on numerous projects in Shanghai and Hong Kong, where the firm had a branch office. Pakidoff stayed with the firm after its nationalization by the Communist government, working under the Chinese management until 1954.
