The progress of the work on Shuyinlou 书隐楼 receives a lot of media attention these days. After decades of official neglect, which caused irrevocable damage to the building, it is suddenly in a spotlight and being cuddled like a baby. What a great opportunity for everyone to be virtuous. Will we see the architectural complex put on rails and moved where it's more convenient, to make it easy for the developers to wipe out the rest of the neighboroohd? We'll know soon enough.

I took the photo below in 2009; this is the "flower-basket" hanging post in the outdoor garden pavilion. By 2018 - the last time that I revisited it - it had turned into a blackened rotten mess, cracked and unsalvageable. So don't blame 258 years of history for the decay of Shuyinlou - blame the last 10.
