The entrepreneur Sir Thomas Hanbury (1832-1907) was a
resident of Shanghai in the 1850s and 1860s; multiple local
schools were named in his honor. In 1867, having concluded his ten-year sojourn in China, he moved to Italy and built a garden on the Lugurian coast, close to the French border, named
La Mortola.
