I believe the location of these two photos (from the
Buck Clayton collection at UMKC) is the roof of the Lafayette Court, at 1248 Rue Lafayette (
street view). This commercial and residential building in modernist style was designed by
Emmanuel Gran for Davies & Brooke and built in 1933. Carson was registered there in 1934, at Apt No. 3.

The row of buildings in the background, at the northern end of Route Gaston Kahn, is not longer standing. The chimney and the small cupola in the distance (second photo) appear to belong to the Institut Technique Franco-Chinois, here seen from the opposite side:
