Over 3,400 historic images of Shanghai mapped on PastVu
Highlights of this project appear on the Facebook page Mapping Old Shanghai. Here are some picks from the latest hundred images in the PastVu gallery.
Nellie Farren and the Canidrome coquettes posing in a Chevrolet provided by the Hartzenbusch Motors. Framing the already decorative shot is the ornamental entrance of the Canidrome, on Avenue du Roi Albert:
The Ye Garden in Jiangwan partially survives to this day. Here it is photographed in 1927:
Advertisements can depict the locations fairly accurately, like this ad for the Russian restaurant Constantinople, on Avenue Joffre:

Style and poise abound in this image of the singer Alexander Vertinsky, photographed on Avenue Joffre outside the Cathay Flats in 1936:
For lack of better clues, we'll concur - for now - that this 1881 image of the Pure Lane Nunnery 净土庵 is indeed the one still found in the old town of Shanghai:
And here is the darling Miss North-China Daily News - the "old lady of the Bund" - standing on her porch and not looking her 70. The backdrop - the old NCDN building, torn down in 1924 - is depicted very accurately, down to the grill-work:
