When I was looking into embroidery machines I found myself lusting after the Brother machines and less so after the Viking ones. This was borne out by reviews I read online, but I ended up with a cheaper Janome one eventually because of lack of cash.
Personally I would go for the Viking one because of the endless hoop option. Mine doesn't have that and it's something I've kept thinking I would like as like you I do a lot of embellishing of the edges of garments, etc. My conventional sewing machine will do that, of course, so it's not too great a loss, but custom edgings would be awesome.
I'm rambling a bit. Honestly, I reckon as long as your software (and dear gods that stuff is expensive) is compatible with the machine, it doesn't make too much difference, they all draw pictures with thread.
