I bought a book today, A Million Little Pieces by James Frey. I was in the Perkins bookstore and bought it on a whim. I had seen it before; a few days ago I was up late watching tv with my roommate and best bud, Frank. Every weekday morning at 2 a.m., channel six shows a rerun of yesterday's Oprah Show and we kids need our fix, I think Wynonna Judd was the special guest. During that episode she spent about thirty seconds raving about another page-turner that she was including in her famous Oprah Book Club; instantly making it a best seller. Thousands of crazed house-wives all over the country immediately flocking to the nearest bookstore so they can escape their dull suburban lives and vicariously live the life of a dirty and toothless crack addict for a couple days. I think people get a real buzz off of knowing how much better their life is comparatively, but if it gets people to reflect and be silent for a few moments I'm all for it.
That must be sweet though, for the author. Thats like winning the fucking lottery. One thirty second spot on the Oprah Show and James Frey is a millionaire probably many times over. Meanwhile Oprah is a freaking billionaire many times over. Oh to be Oprah....drrrrooolll. My day will come, and if it doesn't...well...at least I'm not a crack addict.
Besides buying a book today (f.y.i. I'm on page 144!!!), I had a number of other delightful experiences today including but not limited to: 1) consuming one of Frank's very delicious ice-cream sandwiches. 2) Seeing a beautiful panoramic view of Delaware from my friend's 14th floor apartment in the Towers (the highest building in Newark). 3) Running into the prettiest girl on campus, the always wonderful Kathy at lunch. 4) getting a number of compliments about the shirt I wore today. :-)
