1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before? Traveled alone outside of the country.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year? Yes, I finished my book and moved to New York. However, I didn't find anyone to commit to. Not sure if I should be proud of that one or not.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth? No.
4. Did anyone close to you die? No, thankfully. Unless Jacques Derrida counts.
5. What countries did you visit? Italy, Spain, the Vatican.
6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004? Financial security.
7. What dates from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? Basically all of July and August, especially Barcelona. My first few days in the city.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Traveling alone, moving.
9. What was your biggest failure? A full time job. That asshole guy from Madrid.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Nothing serious.
11. What was the best thing you bought? A green Venetian glass necklace.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration? Chase, Kathryn, Phil, and the whole Heeb crew, for making me so comfortable in the city.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? Republicans. There, I'll say it. Mass murderers in Darfur, and UN leaders who aren't doing anything to stop it.
14. Where did most of your money go? Rent, food.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? the new MoMA, the ultimate tour of Brooklyn, the Mediterranean, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Running of the Bulls, graduation
16. What song will always remind you of 2004? Joni Mitchell -"You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio," U2- "City of Blinding Lights," Counting Crows- "Holiday in Spain," Wilco- "Hummingbird," Iron and Wine- "Upward Over the Mountains," The Decemberists- "Red Right Ankle"... lots more
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? Sadder. But not resolutely, miserably sad... I am happy often, but it's hard to be happier than I was most of last year, and it's a noble goal.
b) thinner or fatter? Same. Always the same.
c) richer or poorer? Poorer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of? Travel, spend more time with my friends (I always have the same two)
19. What do you wish you'd done less of? Complain, settle for less, date losers
20. How will you be spending christmas? With my family. My sister and I always get Chinese food and see a movie, like the true semi-Yids we are
22. Did you fall in love in 2004? Many many times, with places and people.
23. How many one-night stands? It was a three night stand, thank you very much.
24. What was your favorite tv program? Gilmore Girls, Simpsons, West Wing, etc.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year? Er... The MTA.
26. What was the best book you read? So many good ones! An Ordinary Person's Guide to Empire by Arundhati Roy, England, England by Julian Barnes, Poet in New York by Federico Garcia Lorca, and The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles come to mind.
27.What was your greatest musical discovery? Azure Ray, Scissor Sisters, Iron and Wine, Jenny Gillespie
28. What did you want and get? A chance to travel, a chance to move, a great internship, new friends and old.
29. what did you want and not get? A full time job (although I am not sure I want this), a serious relationship (ditto).
30. what was your favorite film of this year? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind ; Bad Education; Tarnation
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I turned 22 and had about a dozen people over to my apartment. I'd been in New York about three weeks and was just happy to have any friends at all. We sat in my kitchen and ate a free cake.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? Not having to worry about money all the time so I can just enjoy my life.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004? Mismatched on purpose. Vintage-y.
34. What kept you sane? Friends and writing.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? Adrien Brody. Johnny Depp. Sweet sweet Rivers Cuomo.
36. What political issue stirred you the most? Gay rights and the election
37. Who did you miss? everyone from Greensboro
38. Who was the best new person you met? Kimba, Kathryn, Chase, Gina, Jessie, DJ, Conor, Damian, McCaff, Josh, Steve, Sivan, Brennan, Jesse, Christie, Marcus... it's been a good year.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004: Trying new things is scary. You can't move to a new city, one that swallows people much larger than you, and expect things to be as they always were. One day at a time, one hour at a time, one neighborhood at a time. Everything falls into place.
