At some point last night- maybe it was being annoyed by those tourists in Times Square, or finding the subway by instinct- but I had this realization that I live here. No, I haven't conquered it like Greensboro, but that city took me two years of wrestling to get to the esconced state. Conquering would mean that something was over, that a goal

I'm sorry that I've been rather flaky of late, but incidents have occured that have precluded any attempt at lengthly communication with anyone beyond my immediate area. But I have it on good authority that it's some sort of Jewish new year, and so I henceforth resolve to be more communicative than I have been.
But more to the point of this comment. I think, if I might be so bold as to offer my opinion on this matter, that you don't miss Greensboro as much as you thought you would because NYC is that much more engaging. New York, unlike Greensboro, is ever evolving and ever changing in ways that Greensboro will not nor cannot. Greensboro follows in the footsteps of cities like New York, and that is why it's so easy for you to carry a piece of Greensboro to NYC. The melting pot mentality applies here, as New York has taken on a burden perhaps too great for any city or nation even. In taking up the world's sick, poor, huddled masses, it has taken on a spirit of acceptance that is greater than it's populace. New York City is the center of the western world, whether it wants to be or not, because almost all cultures and nations are represented in its people. In contrast, Greensboro (in the main) rejects any culture that isn't rooted in the South, and while this attitude is slowly crumbling, it probably won't disappear in my lifetime. Conquering NYC is a conceit that can only come from growing up in a town lacking in so many dimensions. Conquering Greensboro is conquering the New South, conquering NYC is conquering the Western World. The ambition is laudable, but ultimately impossible, because once you've gotten on part of the city down, another arises to challenge you, and when the latter is conquered, the former has changed yet again. That's what makes NYC the greatest city in the world...
And that's why you shouldn't stop trying to take it over ;)
Love ya, hope to hear from ya ... Ernie
