Freshman year, when I started feeling alienated from my group of friends, I started hanging out with Teresa. Last summer, when our relationship started to falter, I stumbled upon Elsewhere. The lesson I have learned: things always come when you need them.
And now I'm getting the chance to live alone, to live downtown like I always wanted and like I should have done several months ago. I wish it didn't have to come this way; I wish it didn't mean straining a friendship and losing a puppy in the meantime. But things always come along when you need them.
After graduating, I don't know what's going to happen. Maybe I'll live on a kibbutz for six months and take an ulpan class; maybe I'll wrestle with California for a while. The only thing I know is that I won't be here. My heart breaks for Greensboro every day, especially when I tour apartments downtown and think of all the lives I haven't gotten around to living yet. But the world is waiting for me, and things always come along when you need them.
