Ahh, I wrote Nina!fic. Sorta. I was working on
_ila_'s (very belated) bday fic when this idea came to me. It wouldn't have worked as any longer, it's 200 words as it is, but I've never explored the Nina/Kim relationship and this seemed like an interesting way to do it. It also occured to me that I don't think I've ever seen her on trial. It should be noted that even though both my parents are lawyers, I know nothing about law, so grant me a little leeway :P
Title: Sentencing
Rating: PG
There is a trial and she is convicted. The whole thing takes about eight months.
She pleads guilty. There are countless witnesses against her. They are there to showcase her crimes, she thinks, to show the world what a horrible person she is. They are unnecessary. Her fate was determined weeks ago.
George Mason speaks of affairs and duplicity, something always having been a little off. Tony Almeida is interrogated, looks haggard and gives short, direct answers. Senator Palmer takes time off his campaign, or maybe brings his campaign to the courtroom, to add weight to the charges.
It is Kim Bauer who looks at the jury with wet eyes and asks for a reduced sentence. Killing her, she says, will not bring my mother back. It is sweet, courageous. Not at all convincing. The judge calls her on it and her eyes dry, become steely.
“If I believed in hell,” she says, “I’d send her there myself. But this woman does not deserve oblivion.” Her voice shakes. “She deserves to waste away. To look around her and know that there is no way out.”
They lock eyes, months later, when the sentence is read. Nina does not thank her.
