Trees were not an option. Leopards loved trees. And there was no way she could outrun it. Her knees knocked together as she wondered why she didn't pack her mace. She took a deep breath and screwed her eyes shut. Suddenly, the world fell away underneath her feet.
She opened her eyes after a few moments and lot of long, blond hair. Yellow blond hair. Maybe it was some sort of jungle angel. She looked again: a muscular, hypermasculine jungle angel. A jungle god maybe? She barely has any time to think about it as her stomach flip-flops about five times when he jumps from vine to vine. She keeps expecting to tumble down and smack the ground, but his giant arm expertly pins her to side as he continues leaping. Jane decides this is a good thing.

She slipped her rucksack off her shoulder and began rifling through it for her cell phone. "Thank you for back there, really! And this is such a nice place, but I really have to get back---" Her hand brushed the phone's edge. She grabbed again, pull her phone out, and held it over her head in celebration. "Yes!"
The wild man snatched the phone and put it upside down against his ear. "Allooo? Allooo?" He laughed.
"Yes, hello, but I really need that back." Jane reached, then crawled forward, but he was too damn tall.
"Here you go," he said, tossing it back to her.
"Thanks, I really need to let them know..." She paused and stared up at him. "Do you speak English?"
"Little bit." He grabbed a leopard skin hanging over the window sill (or what was left of one) and draped it over her shoulders. She began to shrug it off, still thinking about earlier, but he pulled it back up. "No fear. Can't hurt now. Thor kill to protect family. And friends. Thor protect you."
"Thor?"
He puffed his chest out and pointed to himself, and then to her. "ME THOR. YOU JANE."
"Yes, exactly." Jane scooted back into the corner and suddenly noticed five gorillas' heads poking over the window sill. She made eye contact with the one on the left end---the leanest gorilla she'd ever seen. His eyes looked nearly green. Or maybe it was just the light.
Thor motioned for the gorilla's to come in.
Jane held up her hands. "Just wait a sec---"
But all five leapt through the window at once, thick limbs and black fur blotting out the sun. They rushed straight for her---the only female started pulling Jane's hair and rubbing it against her own rough cheeks while the two smaller males tried to steal her bag, right before Jane clutched it to her chest. The biggest, fattest one shoved a banana in her face. And the lean, hollow-eyed one stood up next to Thor and observed the others with a calculating stare. A fine beta male if she ever saw one.
Jane began kicking and swatting at them, but they only took it as a challenge. Finally Thor howled something guttural at them and they all shrunk back. The lean one looked over at him with a knowing smile (if gorillas could smile knowingly).
Thor pulled her up and kissed her hand. "Thor sorry. Wanted Jane to see friends. And brother."
She looked back at them, sitting in the shadows. "They're very interesting...you know, Thor, I think you and your friends could help me with my research."
"And brother, Loki."
The lean one clapped his hands.
"Yes, and Loki."
"Thor help Jane because Thor is CROWN PRINCE OF APES!" Thor shook his fists above his head and the gorillas howled and clapped their approval.
"That's great." Jane pulled her cell phone back out of her bag again and rifled through her contacts. "But right now I need to contact my colleagues and let them know---"
Thor took her hand again. "Thor take you back."
"But my camp is a little bit outside the jungle. It would probably take you hours to find---"
"Thor know the way. Thor know all the jungle and all around it."
Jane took a deep breath. "Yes, I'm sure you do. Let's go."
"And Jane will come back?"
"Yes. I will come back."
Thor leaned down and kissed her slowly. She felt the lean gorilla's eyes on her the entire time. Then he reached out, grabbed a vine, and pinned her against himself again. "We go now!"
Jane had barely finished blushing when they began swinging through the trees again.
She could handle the jungle. She could handle gorillas up-close. She could handle blond wild men with boundary issues. But her thesis could not handle this.
