It's Christmas Day in New York City, and the Marquez household is the busiest it's been in a while.

There's a large pig on a spit roasting in the backyard, covered to prevent it from getting snowed on, and the house smells very strongly of very good food - tamales de carne de cerdo, Pavo Relleno con Moros, Fufú, Salsa de Arándano Agrio con Ron, pastales, arroz con gandules, tembleque, Torticas de Navidad, Flan, and enough rum to drown a small country.

The family has already exchanged presents - there are too many small children running around to wait for very long - but there are still presents waiting for the guests who've yet to arrive.

Mimi has been there all day, helping her mother cook and corral the children, and is currently sitting at the kitchen table with a lapful of wriggling niece.

It's a good day, so far, and when her friends arrive it will only get better.
