Okay - vampire hunter D. They have cyborg horses. They also have occasional heavy transport. Why are the horses cyborgs? Either tell me the answer or make up a good one. Been trying to figure this out. Are they old tech? What happened to real horses? May be more randomness later

the author from what i read wanted a dramatic gothic hero and a good deal of the atmosphere of the frontier lands (because there are actually large human cities in the world of Vampire Hunter D, although the stories for the most part take place in the frontier) to have that american old west feel to it along with a taste of the gothic. the most fitting mode of transport for the area would be a horse. the issue was, that these stories do take place in the far flung future so we got to fancy some things up. in this case the horses. the cybernetic implants allow them to perform greater feats of endurance/speed, but i am not certain if the implants figure into need of food. another reason is the fact that its hard to have unmutated livestock even to the so called present day.
in the anime, almost everyone has cybernetic horses because they look cool. it isn't the case in the books. they are pricey and not everyone can afford even the cheapest of "models". in one of the novels a character ascertains that D must be something more than just a traveling vagabond because of the model of horse in his possession. the character assumes D must be a hunter who makes a good living or had stolen the beast from it's owner. There are the heavy transport vehicles which are used by those who can afford such things, mostly as a safe means of protection through the wild lands of the frontier far as i know.
Also, the novels have a greater emphasis on the lost technology of the vampires and what technology the humans had developed on their own or reverse engineered.
