Absolutely random trivia

Okay - vampire hunter D. They have cyborg horses. They also have occasional heavy transport. Why are the horses cyborgs? Either tell me the answer or make up a good one. Been trying to figure this out. Are they old tech? What happened to real horses? May be more randomness later

Once upon a time, there were no horses, because all the horses were actually unicorns. They frolicked and they were happy, and had all the sweet grass they could eat and all the warm sunshine to lounge in. They were magical creatures, strong and swift, and the people loved them because the unicorns were intelligent creatures that could carry the burdens and did so willingly.

But then the storms came, and with the storms came vampires who brought the sickness... and soon all the unicorns were hunted down and killed because everyone knew that their horns could cure any illness and make whole someone who'd been touched by death. The people had forgotten their friendship with the unicorns, as people are wont to do, and turned against them in their hour of desperation. Eventually, the last remaining unicorns pleaded with the spirits of the earth who had created them, and said "take away these terrible horns... because they only mark us for death, and we never wanted to have to bear a burden such as this! The weight upon our backs is easy compared to the horn upon our brows!" The spirits heard them, but could only answer in sadness: "We are sorry, we can't undo what you are. But we can take you away to a different place, a place where you won't be hunted anymore for your horns." So all the unicorns were taken to this new place, one by one.

But before the last one left, she saw that the people left behind wouldn't have unicorns to ride or as helpers anymore-- so she pleaded with the spirits to maybe leave her there, so there'd be at least one unicorn-- and the people wouldn't all have to walk everywhere, and could even flee from the vampires and the sickness when the storms came again. The earth spirits were so moved by this selfless request that they decided to create an alternative; that is, the cyborg horses-- they wouldn't have the speed or the magic of the unicorn, but they would be made of metal and would stand up to the illness and to the storms.

And that's where the cyborg horses come from.
