cute kid thing

Elisabeth was just pretending to be a Mommy Ghost (I have no idea why a "ghost, it didn't really seem relevant), and announced "Werner, I'm going to give you a lesson." When Werner asked why, she answered "because I'm a MOMMY, and that's what MOMMY'S do." hee hee.

Werner went ahead and played along, and Elisabeth spent a good half hour writing letters out on a piece of paper. Then she would show the letters, or words, to Werner and inform him... this is a "W" or this is how you write "hat." All Werner had to do was say "ok, I'll remember that" and she was absolutely delighted and would go back to writing. It was a VERY cute homeschooling moment.

We've been really working with Werner on spelling lists, and he's been doing much more writing lately in his schooling - so I'm sure that's where she got it from. I really hated spelling when I was a kid, so I wonder if I gave Werner a bad feel for the subject initially. He and I both avoided it for a long time (I kept thinking that he was "too young" for third grade spelling - even though he was doing everything else at the third grade level). But now that we finally are tackling it, he seems to be having a good time. It's still a bit inconceivable to me how doing a spelling list could be fun... but it's like it has become a game for him, where he keeps score with how many he gets right and wrong. I can now totally see why homeschooled kids often win spelling competitions.

So anyway, Elisabeth has now become obsessed with spelling. She is spelling three letter words loudly from the shopping cart while I grocery shop. I sometime get some very strange looks though. (She basically says "F", "U", "N"... what does that spell? And then I say "what do YOU think it spells - she gets TICKED if I just tell her the answer. She then tells me the answer and I say "right!" And then it starts again with a new word.) Anyway, I just wanted to remember these little kid moments with them, so I figured I would lj it.
