It's been a while since I've read anything about the 'gun control debate,' but I was reading
slashdot for the first time in a while and came across some
nonsense about securing individual rounds of ammunition with an encryption key in an effort to make the world safer for the children or some such drivel. I was highly amused by this (

you are mostly correct. i would do everything possible to convince people not to do violence. i would certainly complain about violence being done in my name. but do i think everyone can handle being a pacifist? no. not really. it makes me sad, but i do not think there should be laws against killing people in self-defense? no. i don't think it would make any difference if there were.
i would have a serious problem if my husband (who does not share my feelings) killed someone on purpose. i'm not sure i could handle it. it would probably depend on how he felt about it afterward.
i agree that the comparison between firearms (which i'm not against) and cars is interesting. far more people die of stupidity or substance abuse every year than are killed by guns. the difference from my perspective is that in a car, you are taking a risk and your purpose is not to go out and kill people. with guns, people often have the intent to kill people.
