Rough Draft FAQ

May 08, 2010 15:00

Hi all!

With tension excitement mounting  about the deadline of the rough draft, it's time to reveal how and when to submit your work.

Before I do, I have two other quick announcements:

1) Sign-ups for artists will be starting May 15th. A artist FAQ will be up in the next day or two.
2) In order to help those who may be still struggling with their rough-draft, Avatar Big Bang will be holding a 1k a day challenge starting May 15th and ending May 25th. 10 days to 10k. (With the next 5 days used to edit the heck out of your new masterpiece.) Again, more details to follow.

And now, the rough draft FAQ

1) How do I submit my rough draft?

Please send your rough draft in an attachment to avatarbigbang@gmail.com

2) What else must be included in the email?

Please include this form:

LJ Name:
Email Address: (Please indicate if you wish to keep this hidden)
Title of Fic: (Not the end of the world if this changes later)
Estimated word length upon completion: (Just your best guess please)
Rating: (G - NC17)
Genre:
Warnings and pairings: (Please use your best judgment and warn for the usual suspects: Pairing/torture/rape/…ect)
Summary: (Spend more than a few seconds on this one. This is what is what artists are going to read before they sign on to provide art for your fic.)
Example:

LJ Name: Avatar_Big_Bang_Mod
Email Address: AvatarBigBang@gmail.com
Title of Fic: Aang The Bounty Hunter
Estimated Word Length: Around 25K
Rating: R
Warnings: Kataang, violence, extreme usage of the words “Bro and Bra”
Summary:
An Avatar/Dog The Bounty Hunter fusion. AU Set in modern Hawaii. Aang the bounty hunter, along with his feisty wife, Katara, and their team, Sokka, Suki and Toph, set to bring balance back to the islands he calls home - one captured fugitive at a time. But things start to get strange when the scarred son of a wealthy businessman jumps bail. No one is talking, all leads have dried up, and Aang and company have only 48 hours to find and detain the man known as ‘The Blue Spirit’…

3) Must my rough draft be 10k or more?

No. Your final submission MUST be 10,000 words or more in length, but your rough draft may be less.

4) Why exactly do I have to provide my rough draft/detailed outline? Can’t I just tell you how many words I have?

The reason why you’re being asked to provide the rough draft/detailed outline is for two reasons. 1) To show you’re well on your way to completing the 10k challenge, and more importantly 2) Once an artist chooses your fic, they will be given the copy of your rough draft as a starting point. From there, they will choose a scene or two to sketch out, and email you for additional details.

5) What exactly do you mean by ‘detailed outline’?

The rule of thumb is that your outline must be detailed enough to allow your artist to choose and sketch out a part of your fic. Everyone outlines differently, so there will be no standardized format. Go with your gut, and if the artist has any further questions they will contact you via email. Remember: The more details you can stuff in, the better your outline will help you and your artist.

Good: The Aang and the other bounty hunters decide to hit the streets to search for leads. The Blue Spirit’s neighborhood is a scary place - half commercial dock/half shanty town with people glaring at them from every corner. Worst of all, night is falling and it looks like a storm is blowing in from the west.  Sokka is visibly nervous and then gets all flustered and offended when Suki jokes that he doesn’t need to worry b/c she’ll watch his back. Katara is drawn towards a dirty little girl without any shoes on. She offers her some candy and within a few minutes the girl is speaking, telling her that she has seen the Blue Spirit just yesterday - he sometimes comes to talk to her father, and she remembered the scar. Her Daddy calls the man “Li”….

Bad: The neighborhood is scary, but Katara manages to snag a new lead from a little girl.

6) When is the latest I can send in my rough draft?

June 1st 11:59PM  Pacific Standard Time.

7) May I send in my rough draft now?

Absolutely! If it’s ready, please send it in. :D

8) If I can’t send in my rough draft on time/I don’t want an artist to illustrate my work, will I be disqualified from the Avatar Big Bang?

Every person counts, and as it is it looks like we will have more artists than writers so please do all you can to send in your rough draft. However, if you cannot send in your draft on time you are not disqualified still may send in your finalized version before August 15th.
