As the subject line says I've made it back home in one piece. A very good thing, and a bit close to the edge too.
It was hot down south, I'm talking Africa hot, well not really but that Matthew Broderick line always stuck in my head... I had to head north early because I could barely handle the heat and there was a serious heat wave starting on Wednesday, so I left Tuesday late afternoon, around five, made it home by one am or so. Yes I took I-5 but I set the cruise control for sixty three mph 'cause the bus, Ol' Myrtle T. runs much smoother and quieter at that speed, and hey turtles move slow.
Anyway, back to my narration; Friday was spent building and refitting for the fly-in, I got four of John's planes repqaired and ready and built two ARFs for him. Quick and easy for me, major difficult for him, glad I could help. We did an early dinner at the super steak house with the Wagu beef (nummmers!!!) and then on to the silly BDSM party at his studio. Before I get into that I have to preface it with an explaination of John and my relationship. According to John I'm his oldest and closest friend. He's known me since 2001 and that's far longer than he's been friends with anybody. He also thinks I'm the authority on all things modelling, religious, and automotive even if I'm a total idiot on such things as social, economic, and political. He's a bit racist, tea party, sexist, but in a very strange way that's hard to explain. So we get to the party and everybody who's anybody in the L.A. scene thinks he's "The Dude" and here he is, defering to me, nearly kow towing to me on most subjects and treating me like the honored guest that I am. This gives entirely the wrong impression to those folks and gave me mega status. Great. so now I'm the super SM guy from SF who can out do any of them in this stuff (even though all I know I've learned from our local pagan pervert society folks).
I found it to be quite high-larious.
Saturday morning I got up bright and early and headed off to Apollo XI air field. I found a great spot in the pitts to set up and got registered and even cheated on my diet and had a chocolate doughnut, I know, very bad but only one so it wasn't too far overboard.
As in the past I was asked to do the morning pilot's blessing and it went off as always, smooth and friendly with nice comments afterwards and everybody but the few dommies were happy, yea.
Ater all the official stuff we got to fly, and fly I did. I started off big slow and scale and worked my way through to my jets, starting small and going bigger with each flight.
As a side note I did a bit of jet stuf shopping with Efflux rc and finally got the right batteries for my hot rod Habu. wow! It flew better than it ever has! Very fast and clean and the longest flight so far. Gotta love the right battery for the job. I managed a top speed of 156mph, way fast for a four cell Habu all because of the nifty aluminum fan and hot wind motor I installed. This got me invited to join the "big boys" of jets. So now I'm in the initiate's group of jet jockies. Silly? Yes. But a big deal for model airplane folks. It's nice to be in the "in crowd".
The day continued very nicely like that, much flying happened and I had a great time hanging with friends. Did some more shopping at the sales booths and at the side line swap meet and got taken out to dinner by Gary, the owner of Efflux rc and the jet guys. I finally got "home" around two am to find John and his pet slave in full game (eewww. gross!) So I slipped off to my room and tried to sleep through the heat and their noise. I finally got to sleep around four am and got up at seven to make a cuppa and go back to the field where I had another great day of flying and playing with other kids like me. Major yea!
No I didn't win anything in the pilot's raffle this year, but there wasn't anything I wanted so it worked out fine for me.
Monday and most of Tuesday I spent in John's workshop building planes for him and that was good, but each night was too hot to sleep and he and his pet like to stay up untill four or five am and are very loud people so I never got more than three hours of sleep at any time. That was rough on me as was the heat. Anyway the news and weather kept saying there was a seroious heat wave coming starting wednesday, like over a hundred by noon, so I left early because I just can't take the heat. And you already know about the smooth ride home.
I had a good time, got in lot's of flying and scored some major model stuff. A couple of super jet drives, six new planes, and four new recievers too. Not too bad really. Oh and I came home with more cash than I had when I left. Neat.
All in all a good trip and I'm all but ready to make it to the Big Jolt in november near Chino.
