Prologue:
“It’s a sign,” Izumi whispered when the fire sages told her of the new dragon’s birth. Holding her own new born, Zamora, in her arms, she commanded that a sanctuary for the dragon be built outside her daughter’s new room. There were protests, but they died away when Izumi glared at them with her steely red eyes and waved them away. She then turned towards the baby in her arms, sleeping quietly.
“You will be great,” she said. “You will be greater than your grandfather Zuko and all those before him. You will live with honor and goodness and understand the of seduction of evil without becoming it. You will make our nation great again. Red will show you the way. She has to..." she muttered as she fell asleep on the bed just like her daughter.
Zamora’s eyes flashed with anger and her fingers itched with the heat she was trying to contain. Behind her, Red’s expression mimicked her own, a growl barely restrained. She didn’t care what her mother said. She was tired of this palace, tired of Fire Nation Capital, and, most of all, tired of the Fire Lord. She wouldn't be controlled anymore. She would, however, go to Republic City; she had to.
Izumi looked down at her daughter coolly and repeated her answer with the calm authority that only comes from someone used to having it. The stoney tranquility of her mother just made Zamora angrier and she roared out a mouthful of fire in anger.
“You think you know everything, but you don’t” she yelled, ignoring the childishness of her own voice. “I will never stay here!”
“Zamora...,” the Fire Lord started.
“No! I don’t care anymore. I’m leaving.” But as she reached for the strap of Red’s saddle, her mother’s icy word cut through her actions short.
“What did you say?” She asked, her anger draining by the second.
“I said that your brother Zain will make a better Fire Lord anyways.”
“You wouldn’t,” Zamora whispered, fear inching in.
“He’s only 12, but he’s smart and obedient. He knows his duty and embraces it.” She then looked down pointedly at her daughter. “And most importantly, he puts his people before himself.”
Zamora couldn’t believe it. Not only was her mother threatening to take away her birthright, she was affirming every self-conscious thought she had ever had growing up. She wasn’t good enough. She was too selfish, to hot-headed, and wasn’t the leader her brother would be. Her sweet, calm, and pragmatic brother. It didn’t matter that she became a master firebender at age 9 or that she put her all into everything she tried. It didn't matter that she was passionate because she cared. She would never be what the fire nation needed.
“Fine,” she gritted out, trying to keep the weakness out of her voice. “Give him the crown. If you change your mind, you know where I’ll be.” And she turned again towards her best friend and now her only family.
“Wait.” The Fire Lord called out as she was about move towards the doors. Zamora looked back once more catching only a second her mother's furrowed brow.
“I won’t have you leave empty handed, Zamora. You may no longer be a... a princess, but you’re still my daughter. You will have two guards escort you and you can speak to our council representative Li, who will set you up in a home benefiting your station. I hope you find whatever it is that you’re looking for.”
Without responding Zamora lead Red through the door and took off towards her new home.
