This is how it ends.

This was how it was always going to end.

Annie raises her gun and it kills him a little inside to see that her eyes are cold as ice.

He raises his gun back, and knows he hates himself for doing so.

"I'm sorry, Annie." He tells her, the truth doesn't come often from him, but right now his words are positively dripping with it.

She doesn't blink, "Don't be sorry for something that hasn't happened yet, you might not have to be, and then you'd just be a liar wouldn't you?"

He doesn't respond, can't. It's taking everything he has to keep his arm up. This is the last person he wanted to go against, it wasn't suppose to be like this. It really wasn't.

"This was how it was always going to end, Jeff, you knew that the moment you picked up that gun. You looked up at me and knew."

He wants to tell her, that he looked at her because she's beautiful, because he always ends up looking at her. Not out of habit, but out of need, that he never wanted to ever end up against her.
-but his lips and pride refuse to let the words pass.

God. Why her?

"It doesn't have to end like this, we can fight against them. We can win."

"There isn't a we, Jeff. There never was, remember?"

Each of her words are daggers, cutting him, making him bleed. Making him remember. He's not stupid, he can read between the lines. He can tell this is a barely veiled attempt at what he told her, saying what they had this past year wasn't real. It didn't exist. Never.

Regret bubbles in him, and threaten to override his instincts to win, knowing that she's accepting his bullshit lie, is so...alarming. He's Jeff Winger, he's a lawyer and yes he lies as easily as he breaths, but he wants, no expects her to know when he is. He wants her to know when he's just being a bastard, wants her to know him.

-and she does. She does, but she's accepting his lie as truth because she doesn't care to fight him any more on it. Doesn't care to try and change his mind, to pull out the truth.

She's given up.

She's willing to make his stupid, mistake of a lie, into reality.

His heart drops to his stomach, and he lowers his gun.

"Annie, why are you doing this?"

"Why we all are, the money." She snaps, "Now raise your gun Winger, whatever ploy you're trying to work to stop me from winning isn't going to work."

He takes a step closer, "Why are you doing this."

Jeff catches a flicker of fear in her eyes before it burns away to anger.

"I told you, money."

"No you aren't. You don't have to lie to me Annie."

Jeff dares to take another step forward.

She's unresponsive, but her gun doesn't move an inch.

"You don't have to do this either, just because that ice cream devil told you he'd give you the prize money if you did, you know he's probably just going to take you out too right?"

He stands in front of her, enough to see how tired her eyes look, how pale her skin is. He slowly edges his hand to her cup her chin, then his fingers to span across her cheek. She tilts her head, and locks her eyes with his.

"If we team up, he can't do a thing to stop us. We'll overthrow his stupid plan and I'll make sure you get your prize money, all I ask is that you don't try and create some false reason of why you're trying to win this thing alone. You can't draw lines and pick sides, Annie."

He leans down to kiss her, but she whispers something before he can.

"I'm sorry."

He acknowledges the tip of her gun pressed against him too late, he tenses, waiting for the feel of paint to hit him.

"Annie..."

"You drew the line first, Jeff."

She's right. He did. In front of everyone, she's got a whole group of witnesses to prove it.

Thing is, he really, really, fucking hates that stupid line.

He captures her lips, tilting her head with his hands to further it. She presses back, letting her lips to part to allow him to ravish her mouth.

bang bang

He hears the awful sound of fire, and feels her retreat, letting go of his lips softly. He looks down, there is a growing yellow-green spot of paint on his shirt.

He's surprised to feel her press her lips against his cheek, in goodbye. He tries to respond, but finds her already leaving his arms and stealing his gun. Stealing the bullets and heading towards the door.

She doesn't look back.

For Jeff, he feels like he's been shot with something a lot more deadly than paint balls.
