Zuko sat on the stone railing of the balcony that came off his room. It had been five months since Sozin’s Comet and in those five months he had been trying to return the world, especially the Fire Nation, to peace. It wasn’t an easy task… but with the Avatar and his friends helping the task was slightly easier. Laughter drew Zuko’s attention to the courtyard below.
Sokka was the source of the laughter, as he usually was. Momo was clinging to his head as a polar bear dog jumped on him, trying to get the flying lemur. Sokka’s father had brought some of the bear dogs back with him on his last trip to see how they fared in the Fire Nation’s climate. The bear dogs seemed to be doing well and Sokka enjoyed having them around. Zuko knew Sokka loved animals and they seemed to love him.
An easy smile came to his lips as he watched the scene below. It almost looked like a strange dance. Knowing Sokka… it could have been some dance he had created. Zuko shook his head in amusement.
“It’s forbidden you know.”
Zuko turned his head toward the voice. Mai stood, leaning against the wall, her arms crossed over her chest. “What is?”
“The love you feel for him.”
Zuko’s mouth dropped open. “What? I don’t-”
Mai sighed and pushed herself away from the wall. “Don’t lie to me Zuko. I’m not blind. I can see the way you watch him, the way you relax when you’re around him.” Zuko made to defend himself but Mai stopped him. “And, I can see the way he watches you… like now.”
Zuko glanced down at the courtyard and sure enough Sokka was watching them, a small frown on his lips. Sokka looked away once he realized he was being watched but Zuko couldn’t help but notice the quick glances Sokka sent their way.
Mai reached out and caressed Zuko’s shoulder in a rare display of affection. It had been weeks since Zuko had looked at her with that kind of love in his eyes. She sighed as he reached up and placed his hand over hers.
“You’re right…” Zuko whispered.
“I told you to never break up with me again.”
“Mai…”
“So I’m breaking up with you.” Zuko looked at her in surprise. “I won’t be in a one-sided relationship. And I’ll keep your secret on one condition.”
“What condition is that?”
“That you do something about it.”
