Drabble: Lay Me Down

It was the night before the army of vampires were due to arrive. Sam had called us altogether for a pack meeting and though we were in wolf form… the pack mind was oddly quiet. We all knew what tomorrow could bring.
Tomorrow. My attention went to Sam, his voice clear and strong in my mind. Tomorrow we very well may go to our deaths.
A small whine left someone’s throat. It wasn’t mine because though Sam had ordered me to relieve Jacob in the morning, I was excited for the battle. Maybe that was wrong but I couldn’t help it. I was eager to kill my first vampire.
The battle we go into tomorrow is one that our ancestors have fought before. We will go and bring honor to our names. Sam’s dark eyes moved over each of their wolf faces. Tomorrow as we meet those monsters keep your thoughts on the battle but send your fear home, let the thoughts of home and the ones you will see again take that fear away. Should some of us not make it back… you will be remembered with honor.
Everyone stayed silent.

Laughter finally echoed through the pack mind. Paul’s smart assness had eased the tension that Sam had created somewhat. Even Sam grinned, his white teeth showing.
