Once upon a time there was a girl. She fell in love with a boy. She
was young and didn't know a lot about love and what it meant and she
wasn't spoiled by the harm that love can do to a person when it turns
cold and painful. She believed in that love blindly because this boy
made her feel like most perfect thing on earth. When she wasn't with
him she felt like a part of her was missing, when they parted she
could almost feel something tearing. He made her forget all the pain
and the tears and the poverty in which she grew up. They spent hours
together just staring at each other, kissing until thier lips were
almost numb and staring into each other's eyes, not having to say a
word to know what the other was thinking. She knew that no matter what
happened they would always be together. She didn't know what the next
day would bring when it came to where they would be, or how they would
afford things or what life would bring them, but she knew no matter
what it would always be the two of them together. It was a truth
inside of her that was as basic as the grass being green and the sky
being blue. It was all that held her intact.
Only one day, the sky wasn't blue anymore. He met someone
else...everything fell apart and he left her holding her heart in her
hands, torn to shreds. She didn't know what was truth and what was
fiction anymore. She didn't believe in anything because nothing made
sense. She cried every day 6 months solid and learned to lock her
heart up and put it on a high shelf. Other boys came and went but she
not only kept her heart on that shelf but she built a wall around it.
Every once in a while people would try to take down the bricks and she
would let them but she still wouldn't dust off the only thing she
couldn't afford to lose again. One person came very close, he stole
her heart, dusted it off and kept it to himself, but in the end he
just stored it in different place, not really doing much to mend the
little tattered pieces of what was left of it.
The time came where she became cynical and cold. not letting many
people in and always keeping people at arms length even when they
thought they were close to her. She had forgotten how to hope, how to
allow herself to think about a future with anyone but herself in it.
She became a black hole and she knew it, but she didn't know how to
become a prism. She couldn't reflect anyone else's happiness, she just
swallowed it down and smiled politely.
Then, from the most unlikely place, someone came along that showed her
how to be happy, how to not be afraid to be open and love and not
worry about who was watching her when she was doing it. Alll he had to
do was smile and her whole life seemed to come into focus. Her very
existance pivoted on a kind word from him, because in him she found a
way to become exactly the kind of person she wanted to be. She took
her patchwork heart and handed it to him, quietly and sheepishly, of
her own free will and he took it and made it his own. She began to
picture a future where it wasn't her against the world, and the sky
started to turn blue again, the clouds started to clear. She didn't
just love him because of the way he made her feel about herself, she
loved him because he was the most amazing person she'd ever met and
just being around him fascinated her. She was still afraid of hoping
for too much because she was grounded in the pains of reality, but
deep in the center of her daydreams that she would never admit to
anyone else, she prayed to God that she could hold onto her newfound
happiness until the very second her breath left her body forever.
only one day he took her heart and stomped the shit out of it and
dropkicked it back to her.
And people still wonder why she's so damn bitter all the time.....
