I am gonna discuss behind a cut, for dr who fans who are behind.
Ok, I love the new Doctor. Adore. And Amy Pond...hooked on her, big time. But the real stars of this episode are the writing and the actress playing Liz 10.
It was a very emo ep, which I am a sucker for. The end had my all teary eyed and sniffly, which Jason the Robot makes fun of.
It DID have problems. I don't know how old Stephen Moffat is, but several of the story elements felt...is derivative the right word? A polite way of saying borrowed?
The city in space was very reminiscent of London Underground from Gaiman's NeverWhere. In fact, the whole episode really seemed like something he would write. Which was good, really, but still felt borrowed.
And space whales were a huge part of the X-men universe in the 80's. They were called the Acanthla, I think.
Anyway, like I said, a lot of it felt borrowed. It was put together brilliantly, and it got to me big time. So, can I argue with success? Quibble when I LOVED it? As a viewer, I was enchanted. And that is their job. But as a writer...? I try to be inspired by stuff. Not recreate it.
