pictures and snippets from 2 daytrips running about the many art fairs this March 27-30 in NYC. We got to check out
PulseNY,
Volta ,
ArtNow,
LA Art,
Pool, and
ScopeNY. Never made it to the Armory, Diva, Red Dot, or anything else. Luckily I only had to pay for Art LA and Volta and had free rides in and out of nyc. I was of course overloaded after just one fair and wanted to just sit in a cafe and write. whew. But I'm glad I got to see as much as I did. You'll probably notice a theme to the things that drew me this time around...I'm just obsessed with trash, development and the intersections of wild and manmade.
I'm as mesmerized by the views as the art. Pulse NY fair 2008. view from Pier 40....can't shake this waking dream feeling...it is the anniversary of when I had the
Pier10 dreamvision on March 25th 1999.
and as I gaze out this window I can somehow see the Pier10 Dome...?
ok..back to this dimension....one of my favorite finds at Pulse was artist
Tara Tucker's work at Rena Bransten Gallery.:
Her drawings of hybrid creatures:
Then a wonderful line drawing animation by Catherina van Eetvelde

Here is a man after my own heart too.
wow do I love this piece. Leonardo Drew @ PulseNY.:
detail of that piece:
his use of texture is just sooo satisfying. yes please.
and this one...white paper object language??
how can I resist??.
also loved these beautiful and delicate pieces by Maya Onoda at Pulse. "old japanese paper ('washi') , string, thread, old yarn from artist's childhood home, coffee stains, tea stains, watercolor, sumi ink. 16x20"
largest piece by Leonardo Drew. cast paper 'objects' at Pulse NY 2008 I'm more into the scale of the other pieces but it was interesting to see these objects like skins shedded in display boxes.
amazing interactive piece by Itamar Jobani at the Volta NY fair 2008. digital reflective 'pool'... the effect was so mysterious...
detail of piece by Jacin Giordano at Volta fair nyc 2008. 'The Rainbow's End and all of the Plastic in Between'.
!! of course I love this. like a huge pile of missycakeland slices.
On Sunday I go in again with my friend Jane. The day is gorgeous though still a bit chilly. I'm loving the walking parts and the first blooms:)
We stop into ArtNow where
Jane is showing some of her beautiful pieces and take a superquick look around (she had already seen this fair).
Closer Far Away-
Jane MartinI liked the room (and earnestness) of a San Fran gallery (have to locate my notes)...and also had a nice experience and liked the work at a gallery that I didn't even know existed on Long Island (in Mill Neck?) Also spotted some
Josh Dorman maps in one room- I've loved his work since we showed together at the Islip Museum in The Nature of Things- he had given a slide presentation and was earnest and wonderful in person as well. We're interested in many of the same themes and inspirations...you can dive into his works for a long time. the website is really well done- go see!
After this we went to LA Art, where we saw Paul Kopeikin and I got to meet the photographer (Amy Stein) whose
Domesticated series works I loved at Pulse Miami.
I am so excited that she is doing a book (it's what I was hoping for) and she showed me the prototype while we talked about suburbia and planned communities and such.
DO check out her link on there and look through all the pics in that series!!
Then head downtown to see the POOL fair at the Chelsea Hotel. First stop to say hi to the
Bonac Tonic crew representing from the east end. :)
I hope to replace this photo I snagged from their site with a pic of their installation in the room if/when they upload one. Til then enjoy their sweetsunny faces as I do:)
Then visiting
Priscilla Heine (also from the east end) at her room where she was showing with her friend Moki Cherry, a collagist who incidentally is Neneh Cherry and Eagle-Eye Cherry's mom(!). Ok I don't know about you, but I was all ABOUT the Buffalo Stance back when it came out and used to rock out to my Neneh cassette (knew by heart) so this was just...cool.:)here's a neat image of moki's called the Future is Now:
Priscilla Heine and Jane surrounded by Priscilla's sculptures.
Priscilla with her papercloth baby sculpture. Now that's a bit creepy but I still love her. she's a kooky one.;)
i liked these, also at Pool, now can't find the card with the artist's name.:(
they looked like cell cross sections made of trash, plastic, fabric, etc (yep right up my interest alley).
Met up with
Hermann Huber as planned and talked so much I forgot to take pictures of him and his room.! He had some sample photographs from his
book on 'Cairo's Zabbaleen' and the
Tiring video on display so we were watching that.
Then I had to run out to meet Verena and catch scope before it closed!
Rushing through scope yet still enjoying it...on my trash magnet theme I lingered on some beautiful large scale pieces by Jorn Vanhofen :
walking together and seeing these 2 paintings verena said, 'Look it's you and me, you at the beach/gcountry, me sad and lonely in the city...' :(
Stopped to say hi to John Pollard of ADA, he said it was his best fair ever, he was sad to have to go home! He sold a large sculpture and other works and was so happy.:)
afterwards V and I were exhausted and hungry so we trudged to nearby pj clarks and had some dinner and tried to process/share some of what we had seen.
I was hoping to return with her to Pool for a bit, which was open later, but as it grew later I knew I didn't have the energy to run back downtown and then back up for my bus and she wasn't feeling so hot either...so we called it a night and waited for the bus.
this building was near the stop and I just can't make out if those plants are real or not?? Does anyone know?? it's at 59th st and Lexington.
I slept the whole ride home. I've got a purse full of cards and postcards and jotted notes that I still have to go through, there was a lot more that I'd like to share from what I saw...perhaps I'll return to this gradually and fill in.xo
