Nigger.
Black-boy.
Go back to Africa.
Just a handful of things children have said to Alberto and Adam since they have been at the school. I only recently began unearthing these nasty little playground secrets the boys have been keeping. Alberto came home with a detention on Friday. According to Adam, some kid had been telling Alberto to go back to Africa. On Friday, Alberto was told to go back to Louisiana. Alberto responded by telling the kid to "Go back to where ever you come from." Well, the kid was from Pakistan. The recess supervisor thought that was rather intolerant. So Alberto was issued a detention.
This morning I typed a letter to the teacher letting them know that Alberto is not to serve this detention. If they make him, I will be at the school with my local NAACP representative.
Meanwhile, the search for a great school is underway. Just thinking about the boys' silence through it all speaks volumes about the conditions at the school for black children.
What a fool I am for thinking this school could offer the boys great things just because it outperforms their Baton Rouge public school.
What a trade off: Education for dignity.
