summary : the mysterious draw of the silent night brings him to a slice of paradise

The world was painted in shades of blue and black. The stars blinked tiredly in the night, waiting for the moon to rise; their shine doing little to light the view in front. He had walked down the barely visible forest trail on his way back to the family villa for dinner. He couldn't recall why he decided to go down that path rather than head home for the silent and oppressive family dinner. He would get a harsh scolding from his father when he returned home.

But for some reason, he couldn't make himself care.

There wasn't much to see. But the sounds --- he could hear everything around him.

The rustling of the grass and leaves.

The subtle whistle of the rubbing reeds.

The quiet splash of the stream on rocks or the random fish.

It was as if nature decided to hold a symphony for him. He could only look around in silent awe -- the only intruder in this little slice of paradise.

He didn't know how long he stood there. The moon was nearly overhead when he heard the first rustle followed by a loud snap of a twig in the nightly silence. He stepped back into the shadows of the crop of trees he had exited hours before.

A shadow exited the dark forest to his right. He couldn't tell anything about the person. He seemed rather slender and of average height. The shadow threw up his head and seemed to bath in the weak moonlight. He seemed to be enjoying the quiet peace of the night as well until suddenly with a enthusiastic shout, the shadow ran headlong into the waist-high grass, heedless of the gathering dew and other unknown creepy crawlies hiding in the grass' shadow.

The shadow suddenly leaped up above the grassline and flipped, feet tucked in, and turned in the air once before landing solidly on his feet, hands thrown up into the air like he was calling for applause.

Then one by one, a glow flickered into view. First one on the left, then three by that tree; before he knew it, the shadow he was watching was surrounded by the miniscule glows.

Fireflies.

He stood there watching, captivated by the subtle glow of the fireflies around the shadow. The glow didn't help much to see who the figure was, but when one little one flew by, twirling, it flashed a tantalizing view of flawless skin marred by what seemed like three lines. And just like that, the view was gone.

The shadow looked up again and stood there like that for a while, while he stared on. When the figure turned to leave, he stayed rooted to his spot for moments longer before he too turned and headed back through the dark forest.

The field was dark, barely lit by the setting moon in the distance.

***

He had spent the night at the kitchen table, an empty mug of tea at his side. That's how his father found him when he came down the stairs the next morning.

His father glared and snarled (not literally btw), "Where were you last night? Dinner is served promptly at 7pm."

He didn't reply, eyes staring blankly at the notepad in front of him, music sheets were spilled haphazardly on the table.

"Answer me Itachi," his father demanded.

Dark eyes looked up. "I was out."

You would not believe your eyes
If ten million fireflies
Lit up the world as I fell asleep
Cause they fill the open air
And leave teardrops everywhere
You'd think me rude, but I
Would just stand and stare.*
