anyone remember Short Circuit? hi-tech, military robot gets hit by lightning and becomes 'alive'...
while Johnny 5 was quite hungry for input so that he could perceive the world - as the movie would have it - from a human point of view, he never really *was* human. he could make human-based observations given a basic understanding of context and American English, but he never really had an original appreciation of much of anything around him and really only marveled at the novelty of the things he saw around him as the result of having knowledge about them. he was quirky and endearing in his imitation of the things he knew to be funny, and his appreciation of things he knew should be appreciated, but he never really created anything; or had an original thought; or experienced emotion.
while a bit of a stretch in all regards, that's about how i feel like i'm functioning these days most of the time. i love the input - and feel i appreciate it in a much more human way - but mostly i'm just going through the motions and have little to offer in return. i can do the math and provide the desired response, but, when i extrapolate, i fail to see the point...which is where i diverge from the robot...i want more than a mimicry of what i have seen; i simply lack the drive to create that.
