Infinite Jest

David Foster Wallace

I'm not going to tell you that you SHOULD read this book.  I mean, look at it. Better yet, pick it up. You could kill a small horse with this thing! Flip idly through its pages and you're confronted with a seemingly impenetrable wall of text.  Clearly this is not typical bookclub fare, not something to cuddle up with under a snuggie and a cup of hot cocoa, and definitely not beach reading. What this IS is bragging rights.  But even more than that this is the magnum opus of a troubled literary genius (is there any other kind?!) that, while dense and often difficult to read, rewards you at regular intervals with passages of breathtaking beauty and moments that have you laughing out loud. Sure, you need to read with a highlighter, two bookmarks, and a dictionary by your side but never have I felt such accomplishment at finishing a book than when I closed the cover on Infinite Jest. Six months after I first opened it up. So, gird your loins, get out that highlighter, and pour yourself a glass of bourbon, you're going to need it.
