But heartbreaking in the extreme. Just that opening scene with John looking like he's got a mind to join Sherlock... omg. It was physically painful. Consider me broken.
Have had the same thoughts here, too. Although it always seemed like Mary was possibly still alive when he wrote The Final Problem, and I've had to wonder if Holmes was somehow watching out for him, even from afar. I think that was the implication at the end of The Reichenbach Fall, which I did like, despite the bleeding of my heart.
Oh I loved it. I'm just going to bleed out waiting for the next one. But yeah, exactly. John is left with...nothing. Nothing at all. His "One more miracle. For me." It just killed me. *sobs a little just thinking about it*
I have no words at the moment, so I will just repeat yours: phenomenal but heartbreaking. The only other time I cried over a Holmes adaptation was over Michael Williams's performance in the BBC Radio version of EMPT. *shakes head wordlessly*
I was a bit disappointed that they so blatantly ripped off FINA (hoping for something a bit different), but I am pleased that they at least made the reason for Sherlock's going underground more satisfying than ACD Holmes's was. However, if they carry the Hiatus on for three years, when John's left all alone like that, I may never quite forgive Sherlock.
I've never heard the BBC Radio version *is ashamed* but I can say this had me too overloaded and shaken up for tears. Everything was just so emotionally charged without stepping into the realm of maudlin OOC behaviour (ASiB I am looking at you) that just contributed to the shock I was in pretty much throughout. I blame that opening scene.
I'm headed in for a second viewing tonight. Especially with something like this, I know I'll catch little nuances in the performances I missed the first time around.
OMG are you serious. If you are like me (and I think you are), they are a STAPLE of the fandom. EMPT broke my heart and put it back together so many times I fell in love on that day with the BBC versions - Michael Williams's performance was absolutely stunning. It was the very first time I really saw Watson as a character in his own right, and it revolutionized my thinking about the fandom. Seriously, you should get it. The dramas are pricey but I know where you can get them in torrents if you want, just let me know - but I promise that with EMPT at least you will not regret it. I'm listening to it now just to wash out some of the emotional reaction to Reichenbach.
ETA Scratch that, I found my mp3 disk, I could email the audio to you. :)
(I agree about the so emotionally charged I was sort of in shock; unfortunately I have to teach tomorrow so I'm forgoing the re-watch for tonight. :|)
Can't say I blame you about the re-watch. If I had work tomorrow, I'd just be content to sob into my tea over here, because there is no way I'd be able to function. I am going to cry this time around, I know it.
And yes, I know, I'm a bad Sherlockian for my complacency in getting the BBC Radio series :( I have heard several of them, including LION (they put a band-aid on Canon for me with that one), STUD, REIG, 3GAR (was blah, imo), 3STU, and one or two others which elude my memory at the moment. But never FINA/EMPT.
If you had a torrent for the latter, I should prostrate myself at your feet :D
And the BEST PASTICHE EVER, Abergavenny Murder - you will be laughing hysterically throughout. Andrew Sachs succeeded Williams in this, and though he's not my Watson he's a dang good one and the story is hilarious. I listen to it whenever I'm feeling miserable, because it's hysterical. ABER: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FAUH5DFC
3GAR was blah (you have to have the ones that Bert Coules wrote, the others are just mediocre). STUD was fantastic. EMPT and FINA were fantastic. LION was fantastic. THOR was fantastic. Anything Bert Coules wrote was fantastic. :)
Good lord, but you are made of pure awesomesauce :D :D :D CHAS is also a favourite here, so I think my brain jsut went on a squee-happy overload. Hee! *proceeds to download*
P.S. ~ Yus! The price is a bit, um, restrictive, to say the least... I've actually had this set in my Amazon wish list for about 3 stinking years :/ Though I never thought to check ebay. You give me ideas, and they are wondrous things *hugs*
KCS, you are amazing, you are fantastic :D And all other sorts of wonderful things which deserve to have sparkly hearts and rainbows thrown at their feet. I would be chasing my tail in glee right now, if I had one :D That series is ridiculously hard to come by in downloads, and you have made my day <3
I lucked out and got a bootlegged mp3 on Ebay like, seven or eight years ago. In my defense, I didn't know it was bootlegged. *shifty look*
However I can't say that I'm sorry, as the series is so expensive as to be a bit ridiculous. :) Enjoy, as you deserve it. I'm squeeing over EMPT right now, which is making me feel just a teensy bit better. *sniff*
Aw, crap, that bad? :(
